From the first time I saw / read this Hodinkee announcement, it instantly didn't sit well with me. I can't really fully articulate it. But there's something wrong about the whole thing - how they can brazenly trump their own product and how expensive it fetched. Is it just me?

What might be bothering you is the double-role that Hodinkee is playing as both a media-outlet (e.g. blogs and reviews) and also a retailer.
I believe that is what is called a “lifestyle brand.”
Keeping up with the Hodinkians
I don't understand it. Their butts are far too big,. Not attractive. And they mainly sell watches to pro basketball players.
It is a lot easier to love a vintage piece worth 10k than the same watch for 2k.
No, quite the opposite in fact. I completely tune out when it's north of 5k. I can't enjoy wearing something worth 10k on my wrist, and it only worth 10k if it is in good original condition. (so forget getting it waterproofed by changing the crown and the plexi if it is a vintage for example).
So, no vintage straight lug speedy for me.[/QU
I think most of us feel better when our watches are worth more, rather than less. My point is really that there are a host of new problems that arise in a strong vintage watch market, but there are plenty of problems in a weak one also.
True. I guess it depends though.
While I do agree that collecting obscure brands is fun and affordable (eg. my ongoing obsession with JMWTO's), it can be frustrating if one wishes to buy a watch one likes, only to find to one's dismay that the value is going up inexorably or rocketing up suddenly. Eg. A386, vintage Sub, a nice 1675.
Some of the price increase in part of the general trend (eg. vintage SS rolexes), but some of it is unexpected (at least to me) and fairly sudden (eg. prices of the GP 9075-AF Olimpico). So it can be frustrating to see something double in price within a year, especially when it seems that it's part of a general increased awareness of certain vintage watches which was triggered by crazy prices at the top end of the vintage market.
I like your description of the top end of the market as being full of s**t. Fortunately I don't (and can't afford to) swim there, but like you, even from a mile away, I still have to hold my breath too 😁
Now does anyone have a nice crispy GP 9075-AF Olimpico to sell for $5000? Please contact me...😗
