Hey guys, got this interesting offer, a 1964 gilt sub, from a local dealer. Impressive watch to wear, but would like to hear opinions, specially on the dial: damaged or consistent patina? Thanks!

I can’t speak to authenticity as those dials have an insane amount of traps, but personally I dig the look. I wanna see that a Sub’s been put to work - and this one surely has seen some action!

Ah Vintage Rolexing, where paying more for something that’s falling apart is the name of the game...

Assuming all the usual caveats, that looks fairly consistent to me.

I had a gilt GMT similar to this...the starry night.

Good looking piece.

What’s the ask on this?

"Damage" and "patina" are just words. Is it appealing to you? That's what matters. Because you are going to get diametrically opposed opinions on this dial. Personally, I'd be happy to wear it, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it. Just my opinion. However, there's probably someone out there who will pay extra.

^^^Agreed. I have this one for sale, and I examined it profusely, mostly because I’d never held one like it one and wanted to understand it. It degraded at some time, but looking at the dial TODAY it seems it’s done any degredation it plans on doing. Call it whatever you want, it’s freakin’ awesome in natural light:

Looks nice but I think that it is water damage...

Thanks for your thoughts. He is asking 18k euros, lugs are ok but not perfect. What do you think?

Thanks! I hear you. The dillema is liquidity vs uniqueness of the watch. I guess at 18K euros I am not paying a premium for the uniqueness of the dial (and still a Rolex is probably the more liquid brand in the world) but want to make sure that it is not plainly damaged

Depends.
If you are seller this is patina,
If you are buyer than its damaged 😁

You MUST get hands on with this watch.

18000 Euro is not out of line to ask.

Don't fixate on damage or patina - this is an understood aging of this type of dial. It's accepted. The only question you have is whether or not you like it.

However, photos can be terribly misleading. You need to see it in person.

If it were me, I'm be on a plane with a pocket full of bank notes.

At 18k Euros it's definitely worth a closer look. We have only seen the one photo, but you've obviously seen the case from all angles. It would be nice to see the inside as well, just to make sure everything is correct.

Thanks, really appreciate your feedback. So if everything matches you believe it is an interesting price?

It's not to my taste, but I kinda figure that the damage/patina thing is almost wholly subjective anyways.
