Was scrolling through the auction results and with a few exceptions the final price was well over the estimate. Does that mean the high end market is strong as ever? Or was the auction house playing coy with bidders?

I find estimates are almost always low.. but not that low!

Would not a geigercounter be helpful in differentiating the original lume from a relume? SPMradlume.jpg

I think the lovely brown 2915 price here was bizarre, exceptional and crazy but a nice break from the real world doom and gloom going on around us to be honest. I don’t think anyone seriously believes a new price expectation has been realised here, but I do think it was a pretty unique looking and rare watch.

On a serious note though, I do hope that it might curb the negative talk of bubbles bursting, overpriced Omegas and slow markets that I have been hearing about for the last 15 years, it just sucks the joy out of everything.
The news is bad enough to watch so a nice bit of escapism watching the crazy auctions is a nice break.
Cheers, Michael
So true M. It’s either “bubble due to burst” or “money laundering”

Not really. It just says there is radiation, not where it is. A simple dot of material on the reverse of the dial produces the same effect.

Only to a point: it will tell you whether some material on the dial or hands are radioactive, but it can’t tell you re-lume vs no re-lume.

If a restorer used Radium in the restoration process, other clues would be needed to make that determination.

For 30 years? So you were bored of those talking down the values and calling top 20 years before they actually rose? Interesting.

And a bleached bezel. Nice

Nice looking watch though, even with the plier attack on the first few links..

I don’t know what you mean, do you really think crazy prices increases for vintage watches is a new phenomenon?
Do you think I’m making it up?
Really?

You are posting on a thread discussing a watch that would have hammered for maybe $25K 15 years ago and is today supposedly worth $3m (after buyers fee). Do you see a linear relationship there?

For whatever reason, that first link joining the end-piece is surprisingly buggered on many flat-links I’ve seen. Don’t know why it happens, but it’s distracting and not appealing to me.

I would also note that the depth of the groves on the 516 above link look shallow, evidence of polishing.

In your case now I wonder if rule #1 wasn’t don’t pick your nose with a pitchfork but thanks for playing.

That`s what happens, if you ( for example ) are clumsy and change the original Number 6 endlinks into repros. just for example....
