Accidentally ticked private - oops

Ok Now

Many thanks. If that Phillips one (400k) is a relume that puts a lot of top watches in question don’t you think? Look how perfect Michaels 2998 is a few pages back - I don’t believe or imply that’s a relume …just a perfect comparison.

The hands have moldy edges and the plots have some darker patches too.

Ofcourse I know nothing really, but can’t help to follow the adage of ‘ignore the sellers description and listen to your eyes’ (as when it comes to auctions and money to be made prudence puts big houses in the same category as eBay/catawiki etc)…if this was relumed, when could it have been done? In the 60s, due to someone not wanting radium?

The only thing I’d add to the wild prices, if you happen to be a billionaire, what does it really matter if the watch was 1 million or 3 million, it’s all pocket change to you at that point.

My 2998 is certainly not a relume, if it was I would gladly say it was. 👍
It is in fact the most perfect specimen of a Speedmaster I have ever seen (in my eyes) and that is why I still own it after many, many years.
If you ever need a bench mark of what original lume looks like, look at my watch, in fact the whole watch is original matching lume colour in the hands and all.
I can say with all the confidence in the world that if anyone says otherwise they do not know what they are talking about 😉
Cheers, Michael

I would show mine off but not a hint of brown in sight, if anything the dial is going a nice graphite colour and the bezel has a hint of blue..

Blue is the new Brown......

Yes, it is ridiculous, these total A-holes showing tropical Speedmasters all over the net today now thinking their watches are worth fortunes.
Here’s mine 😁

This kind of behavior is childish and completely beneath the standards of this community. Here’s mine:

This looks like it’s gonna kill my attempts at a 2998 - I’ve been chasing a few recently and contacted a seller last night about a watch that no where near competes with a watch from the auction. Price asked was $135k and a link to the Phillips auction provided

Respond with no further explanation but only a link to this Sotheby’s auction:

I understand the excitement if you are sitting on an early brown dial straight lug but one swallow doesn’t make a summer. Speedy values have languished for quite a while. For one watch to suddenly hit 10x the price of the previous one might indicate a massive step change in values across the board or just that it was a questionable outlier. The next auction will indicate if there is a pattern.

I don’t envy William trying to work out how to factor this watch into his price sheet. Does it really mean a 2915-1 is worth all the others put together? And then some. Does a rising tide float all boats?

I agree, I think the main factor with future auctions is who is buying the better vintage Speedmaster's, if its mainly Asian bidders then maybe we can see a shift in their collections and this will mean more money being thrown at good watches.

Bit like Rolex, it starts with one reference and feeds out to the rest..

Beautiful, at least the top of your lugs are not mirror polished like the Phillips watch, maybe add another zero to your watch now😉

After this btw, the elves are going to be out there trying to assemble 2915s, making more fake listings, cooking up 321 dials in ovens to get that same tropical patina, the money does invite that

And of course they will say that these are from Qld. Australia where the climate is conducive to creating that condition naturally - just like the "authentic" faded Aussie DoNs that flooded the market in 2015.

I think the lovely brown 2915 price here was bizarre, exceptional and crazy but a nice break from the real world doom and gloom going on around us to be honest. I don’t think anyone seriously believes a new price expectation has been realised here, but I do think it was a pretty unique looking and rare watch.

On a serious note though, I do hope that it might curb the negative talk of bubbles bursting, overpriced Omegas and slow markets that I have been hearing about for the last 15 years, it just sucks the joy out of everything.
The news is bad enough to watch so a nice bit of escapism watching the crazy auctions is a nice break.
Cheers, Michael

Will we know if the winning bidder pays in the end? Will it be made public?

Was scrolling through the auction results and with a few exceptions the final price was well over the estimate. Does that mean the high end market is strong as ever? Or was the auction house playing coy with bidders?
