After all, why would any human being join a terrorist group if the people they want to kill haven't done anything to them?
The short-sighted view of this is, "We must kill them. We must get revenge" - completely ignoring the fact that when you start bombing an already miserable group of people, even the moderate members of that society will begin to hate you back, and decide, "We must kill them. We must get revenge"... and then they do, and then we think, "We must kill them...."
It will never end until we start emphasizing understanding between these cultures, rather than killing the Other.
Doesn't seem to be shortage of people wanting to join IS. Just wondering what you think the kids at the concert did to "them" to deserve being shot in cold blood.
One thing that irks me is the hashtag and generally popular responses: "pray for Paris" and "pray for peace".
To which god are they praying? The one that willed this to happen? Or the one who did nothing to stop it?
Facts are part of the problem? That's an interesting take.
hand-wringing over Western rights and wrongs isn't going to solve anything here; simplistically, sometimes you have to punch the nose of the guy that punches you.
Want to say that the US is a bully? Go right ahead, but we aren't beating on people who are just standing around on the sidelines minding their own business like the poor victims out having a nice Friday night in Paris or the 2K+ that went to work or boarded planes on 9/11. That's barbarism.
A boy that never even thought of anything beyond his town, only to see his family and friends killed by a drone attack has the same blood running through his veins than we do...
OK. You said what you don't want to. I get it and I don't disagree.
Now what do you want? Understand that because of the idiocy of US (and all the countries in the EU) foreign policy, hundreds of thousands of refugees are being scattered across Europe. Some will make it here, as they have American connections. No doubt a few will be terrorist plants, just waiting for the encrypted signal to show up on their mobile phones that will start the massacre all over again. We have given them no hope, so they will take ours instead.
When the first Gulf War ended without a true resolution, I knew that we opened Pandora's box. The forces that we unleashed are coming back now to bite us all in the ass.
This ain't the Terminator movies folks. It's real and isn't going away any time soon.
To me the choice is simple. Either assemble the world's largest invading army with the idea that the Middle East is going to need to be occupied, denuded of people and totally rebuilt over the next 150 or so years, or conduct a war by "remote control", knowing that more incidents like WTC and Paris are going to happen occasionally as waves of refugees move arount the planet.
You pays your money and takes your choice. Please remember this as you cast ballots in the US 2016 elections.

One mans terrorist is another mans patriot. It's just the way it was, is and will be.
