Hi Forum Friends,
its time again for another auction!

The one that I followed this time was a 2998-5, so it might be a bit outside my comfort zone…
And I wasn't going to bid on this one..
Some of you have of course already seen this one since it is a well know auction house?

I do like to learn more, so I asked for more pictures and extra info.

The watch was a one owner, and serviced at least one time.
Serial nr 18.945 mil, so that would be correct for this ref.
The crystal was very very scratched,
but looking at the different pictures, the lume plots looked very nice and complete.

And according to the curator, the dial was very nice also (and sometimes you have to trust them?).
No Professional text and Swiss Made at the bottom.

The hour and minute hands are the nice alpha hands with the triangle lume.
Not sure about the length of the minute hand?

The bezel (DON) was really beaten up, so that was a big minus.
The case and caseback were of course polished, but there were visible edges/lines (not so sharp..).
The crown and pushers were serviceparts.

The movement was in need for a serious service/overhaul,
and there were same strange color differences on some of the copper parts.
It did have the symmetrical clutch bridge, and since it was a one owner,
I didn't think that the movement had been ”dealer tampered”.

The estimate was 8800 - 13200 € / 9000 - 13600 $ plus the 25 % premium.
There was some action during the biding, I think a total of 8 bids,
and finally the hammer went down at 11650 €/ 12300$ including the premium!

There has not been so many 2998:s on auctions recently so its a bit hard to compare,
but I do think that the winner got himself a nice watch with a decent price.

What are your thoughts??

It seems virtually impossible to tell about the dial from those pictures. Hard to make a serious bid without that information.

I don’t follow 2998’s that closely but I think that will clean up wonderfully.

Of course due to the condition of the crystal, any serious bidder who couldn’t view in person would need to spend a decent amount of time comparing photos from various angles to satisfy themselves that there are no scratches on the dial.

Potentially a great buy imo

I can only agree with you David, and the more I look at the pictures, the more I like the watch!
I found out that the winner of the watch is a Swede with a lot of knowledge regarding vintage watches.
And I do think that he was at the viewing, and made a "solid" value regarding the dial?

What are some popular and common auction houses that everyone is watching?

It's probably out of my budget now but I do want to add a vintage Speedy to my Omega collection in the next year or two.

Pictures! Pictures!
It will have to wait until next week. Sorry. It is still with Bukowskis.

Grattis @PerJ !

I think you did very good I have not seen the watch live but it looks like it’s going to clean up beautifully.

Definitely an advantage in this case to see it live since it is very hard to see if there are any smaller issues with the dial.

It's too bad people considered watches tools back then and didn't baby them!

It’s just a scratched crystal. The condition of the watch is honest and nice. 😀

Scratched crystals have gotten me some superb watches over the years at great prices, its amazing what people will pass over due to some scuffed plastic.
