Flight crashed Flightmaster?

I actually did a complete overhaul of my 911 some 10 years or so ago. It was one of my first ever purchases and at the time I could not afford much so it was a bit of a bargain flightmaster with issues. So several years later I opted for the works.

This was a while ago but the overhaul (incl. inner rotating bezel and pinion gear) was just over $1k. They quoted for a new dial which was only US$130 at the time. New caseback was a similar amount. The service case with the crappy foam insert was of course free 😀

I should add that the dial seems really cheap. Around the same time I also sent a basic Geneve Dynamic and they quoted US$1k for a dial which I declined as it was worth 3x the value of the watch itself. So seems like they may have flightmaster dials they want to get rid of.

Based on the side by side photos posted by @JimJupiter this morning, are these two actually the same watch?

I would say yes. Have a look at the chrono second hand or the left sub. Same marks as on the other one. As someone mentions here, the dial seems to be washed, bezel was added as was a crystal.

Since I initially posted the watch here. I have nothing to do with the seller, owner or watchmaker 😁

Looking at the serial number, it is a very early piece, like OCT1969, 300 less than mine...worth saving!

Looking at the pictures available, is it just me or the hands of the watch were also replaced (for worse looking versions)?
I see the lume overall looking better in the pre-clean up version, as well as the paint on them...

The dial does seem to be the same (a few of the blemishes are in the same spot) even though with the extra damage post-clean up.

Yeah, looks like they kind of went in with a clever rather than a scalpel- but lord knows how any of these things faired when they tried to remove them- that lume may have just disinterested the second they pulled those hands off. And some of those parts look pretty well rusted on so may have required some brute force rather than finesse.

yeah, good point. that's a fair assessment.

For me, they’ve ruined it.
IMO the patina/damage should have been left or a complete nos revamp done.
I’d not buy it now, it’s just a shadow.

Just came along this offer and wanted to share with you

https://www.ebay.de/itm/385460245398

Interesting to see how a watch can be damaged in a fire. Tbh I would imagine worse. Hands are still "intact" as is the inner bezel. Maybe the crystal saved them, but was detached later to see whats left inside. Would be interesting to see the movement.
Someone here brave enough to get it? 😀

Some pics for documentation purposes:

Tarantino apparently wanted to use it in Pulp Fiction but Christopher Walken didn't feel very comfortable about it..
You know, being a method actor and all::facepalm1::

Is this the new trend? People cooking their watches to get those chocolate dials is so passé. Now, it's burning up your Flightmaster and claiming it belonged to a storied pilot who crashed while wearing the watch. Oh yeah, the pilot died in the crash, of course. R.I.P. Now, does someone want to pay an outrageous amount of money for this thing?
