Interesting…. In my 33 years as a police officer I responded to several - I stopped counting at 150 - fatal crashes. Cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, trains, ATVs, farm implements and two airplanes. One of them involved a car vs truck. The driver of the car died. His watch was on the floor of the car and stopped at the time of the collision. If you can pinpoint the time of the crash (above) you may see if it corresponds to the watch. Oh, and one of the planes that crashed carried only one occupant, and he walked away. His plane was totalled.

Hmm, they said the pilot switched from instrumental to visual flight at 3:22 pm. The watch shows 4:09pm. Not to far away either. But I think thats pure speculation 😁

Uhm, wow!
Not sure whether someone on OF bought it but I’m struggling to see the value. A lot of bids from different bidders - genuinely surprised it attracted such interest (and I’m a proud owner of a 145.026).

Out of my price range. The auction ended during the Things with springs chat. So we were discussing the case and hands. I was comparing to the Heuer hands I plan to restore.

I also got an A11 movement with a stripped hour hand. So the case and hands are salvageable.

Earthquakes clocks and watches used to sometimes tend to show up from the 1906 quake and fire. These were stopped arround 5AM. Of course people choose 5:13 because they can.

I have a repeater watch from the 1990 East bay hills Fire. (and a grandfather clock from 1989.)

The repeater was still wet when I got it at the Mart. The steel quickly rusted. Why I made a pinion cutter as I could not find a matching wheel train in my friends spare parts. I keep meaning to dig these parts out and make a thread. Part of the reason I burned out on watches in the early (pun not intended.) Was I got in over my head wanting to restore it. Too easy to get sidetracked with things like the enamel painting classes or How EDM machines work. It would probably be simpler to make a new watch from raw materials.

I seem to be falling back into some of my old habits. At least this is one I do not have to deal with.

I bid but wasn’t prepared to go that high knowing it would cost a bomb no matter which way I would go with it. I would have sent it Al’s way to get running with as much char left as possible.

I also placed a bid, but didn't want to bid all the way to the end because of too many unknowns about the restoration.

The crash time was listed as 15:30. As an aside it looks like yet another impossible turn/ stall situation. There is a push to get light aircraft pilots better trained on minimum airspeed, loss of power response and low speed manoeuvres, Forget stall recovery - just make sure you never stall. A lot of people still seem to be dying every year by dropping out of the air sadly.

That price is probably is the border line price for a restoration that still make economically sense.

Because I’ve got no intention of selling, I’ve no idea what a good flighty is worth, but that seems an excessively high price for a wreck.

I've trained & soloed on a single-engined 1970s Morane-Saulnier Rallye which had expanded "slats" on the leading edge, which automatically deployed when one was flying too slow... always a surprise when You see these deploying the very first time, adding additional lift !
By 1967, Morane had changed its name in SOCATA - Societe de Construction d'Avions de Tourisme et d'Affaires and many of these a bulbous cockpit general aviation beauties are still training many pilots to this day.

Sounds like the same technic the old Messerschmitts BF-109 had. Just hold in position by a spring and the aerodynamical drag.

Price makes sense.

look at the majority for sale in the 3-4K range. Great dial and hands poor case.

this case looks sharp with no dings and should clean up very well.

possible to push to a 5-6k value watch with this case and a donor dial and hands.

Even paying Omega (or a masochistic omega certified watchmaker) $2k+ in parts and labor would still put you ahead of the curve.
