First Omega purchase - couple quick questions about in the wild experiences

I was looking specifically at the Saphire Crystal model for scratch resistance qualities - should I be avoiding that?
The other nice thing about the sapphire Speedy is the display caseback. The sapphire Speedy is a bit more dressy as well. The "classic" hesalite Speedy has a softer look to it, so it really just comes down to preference. If you decide to consider Planet Oceans, I would recommend the original version with the 2500 movement (discontinued so no longer available directly from Omega). The newer PO versions are quite thick in comparison. But really just try a bunch of different watches on, and I'll bet one of them will speak to you loudest!

- Must have a good level of recognition. I regularly deal with clients/customers sporting high-end luxury & sports watches, and hope to make a favorable impression on them with my own choice. This is among my primary reasons for buying, and hearing from owners how their watches are, or are not, recognized organically in the wild is my primary reason for this post.

If you want a watch for your own enjoyment (which I strongly recommend, rather than getting something for others to notice). If you do that, then you should get one you like the look of and maybe one you appreciate the history behind (like the Speedmaster).

If your primary concern is truly recognition, then I will go against the grain and recommend a Rolex. Majority of people will never notice your watch, but for those who do, they will be 10x more likely to recognize a Rolex over any Omega.

Based on your criteria alone, I would suggest:

1. GMT
2. Submariner

If you want the recognizable brand yet somewhat lesser known model (and available...), I would suggest the Explorer II. I find mine fits equally well at work and at play.

I have around 20 watches including a few speedmasters and seamasters and the only one anyone has ever commented on or noticed is this one. Get some bling.

Welcome

First of all I would say, don’t buy a watch to impress anyone else, buy a watch that you will enjoy. I’ve met a lot of people who buy watches, mostly Rolex or Tag (not slating these brands) with no idea about the watch they bought, just that they think it’s impressive.

I own all 3 of the watches you are considering, the first I bought was the Aqua Terra for my 30th Birthday. I wanted something with a timeless design that could be dressed up and down.

The SM 300 is my everyday watch, I wear it by the pool on holiday etc

My speedy pro is probably the most sportiest. Remember the original purpose was for racing.

I would suggest the Aqua Terra on braclet and either get a leather or rubber strap to dress it down.

Another option would be to look into the pre owned market for an AT and SM300 if your budget will stretch.

As others have suggested though, try all three on and go with what feels right for you

I concur with the other members, don’t buy a watch to impress, rather buy a watch that will make you feel proud and that you will enjoy every time you look at it. No-one’s noticed my ‘nice watch’, but my old orange and black cheapie quartz has garnered many comments...

I’m biased towards the ‘traditional’ hesalite Speedy, but a FOIS is certainly more dressy and looks really classy. Try them all on and see which one speaks to you - and have fun while doing so!

(PS check out the new Mark II Speedy in the flesh)

Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'm an about-to-be-30 something who's working my way up in the business world and am looking at upgrading my watch as a gift to myself. I've always gravitated to Omega over other big names and really look forward to joining the club.... but I'm considering 3 different models and am hoping to hear something from the current owners regarding how they fit my "in the wild" criteria.

- Must look good in a suit, and preferably, also around the resort. So nothing too far in the formal or informal direction. Again this is an area where what I can read advertised on the Omega site may be different than the in the wild experience of owners.

I'm considering, in order of preference (even though the order can be shuffled based on my mood....)

1. Speedy Pro
2. SM Aqua Terra
3. SM 300M Diver

Thank you for any input you can provide. Frankly, if I receive a significant response indicating the Speedy Pro is regularly recognized in the wild and appreciated I'm leaning in that direction. I just don't know if it can hang with the more attention-grabbing Seamasters.... and obv I can wear the SM's in the pool.

Thank you for any input you can provide!
Welcome here.
As a friendly advice, you make the watch, not the opposite.
I would choose the Speedmaster but would not wear it at a resort.
If I would only have one watch I would buy a used Rolex submariner no date no ceramic bezel or an Apple Watch.
My second would be a Speedmaster.
Howeve4 there is no right or wrong.
Good luck
Cheers

100% agree! Submariner could be seen and recognized from miles away, if this is what you are looking for. Also it is a solid watch with a lot of history. I have my speedy recognized once or twice, unlike my explorer II. But, like a lot of people were saying, buy what you like and what you think fits your wrist and the lifestyle.

Thank you for all the advice, the reaction here has been fantastic.

I'm a huge fan of all 3 of the options I'm considering (And the Rolex's some have suggested!) and will feel incredibly fortunate owning any of them. It took years of hard work before I could justify spending this much on a watch... anything I wind up with will be a point of pride for me.

I'll return with a final post after heading to the store to try them all out/buying..... thanks again, everyone.

I just picked up my first Omega this week - and Aqua Terra Blue Wave with Gold hardware - and I am over the moon with it. Got it for $3,700 new - I would like a special edition moon watch next. Can't really go wrong with any omega tlGQcDl.jpg
