I’ve resisted the temptation till now because, and this is heresy in these parts and will get me lynched, I’m not really a fan. But then I saw this 3513.53.00 and it looked sharp. Plus being a Japanese release not really common.

Am I correct that it is a Speedmaster Date and not a ‘reduced’ it was listed as?

I’ll get some better shots but it only just arrived…

I’m still resisting. I was at a friends last weekend and her mum and dad turned up and had a newly purchased professional. Needless to say My temptation grew

Congrats on the new to you Speedy! One day I'll join the club, but setting the goal of joining with a birth year one is challenging.

Up until now I’d have said I’d only buy a vintage Speedie (c.60’s) as the innumerable Speedmaster variants and iterations since don’t do it for me and have left me with the feeling Omega has run out of original ideas. Bit like Hollywood recreating tv shows because they lack imagination. Don’t mean to fault the product itself which is clearly quality and obviously enough has many many supporters. Anyway, saw this and liked it.

Congrats on the speedy, I was considering this particular reference myself but decided to go with a different speedmaster date as I wanted the SS bracelet. I'm just feeling old if this is now considered a vintage reference, but I guess these are coming up on 20 years...

Well...........it's not a real "Speedmaster" is it?

    ;)

But like al branded products, is a Karmann Ghia any less enjoyable than Porker?

26 apparently. Only sold in Japan in 1996 (maybe ‘97 if you allow for a few unsold) in this configuration.

I’m with you. Not really vintage.

It does look sharp in the flesh I have to say.

Well no Jim, it isn’t. (The Speedie I mean)

I’m going to assume that maybe spellcheck threw in the word Porker rather than Porsche. The similarities between the Karmann Ghia and its contemporary Porsche are rather too many, and don’t necessarily reflect the difference in price at the time. I’d happily have one in the garage to beetle around in (sorry!) but that doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally regret not biting the bullet on the 356b I looked at in 1974 for $2400 (the seller had listed it under ‘Bargain’ in the motoring classified of the Saturday Age instead of ‘Porsche’).

which means that maybe one day I’ll wish I had bought a proper Speedie but in the meantime I’ll settle for my stylish and slightly shrunk Karmann Ghia version

Like the Karmann, the Speedie autos are no less of a watch than other items from the same stable.

I often regret the chance I had to pick up a Speedster coupe in about 1975, and rejected it, all because it had a cracked windscreen.
    What an idiot!

    Ouch! Fair enough.
I’ll go with not buying a Datsun Fair Lady convertible 2000 for peanuts because the synchro on 2nd was shot. Or … never mind …
