Crazy brown dial on this Speedmaster currently offered by a German dealer.
Two questions to the experts, the case is obviously either polished or it is an entirely new replacement case- never seen such sharp lines. Did you ? Second a Naiad crown on a Speemaster ?

Hi!

Good to see you’re trying to spark conversation on this piece. I’d be curious to get more opinions on this piece too. That said, forum etiquette requires one to promote sharing through sharing. So, why not start sharing more than one picture as well as details to go on, like sub reference, serial and price?

To your questions; no, I haven’t seen a 2998-case in such a sharp condition and suspect it has seen work. As to the crown; a naiad could be correct for an early 2998, which this watch seems to be, judging by the subdial (2998-1 or 2998-2).

Imo, case is refinished, the 2998’s didn’t come with a sharp cut bevel like that. Naiad crown could be correct for that ref.

I also don’t think that case profile is correct.

It looks like the case work that Omega carries out to ‘return’ them to factory spec. However there neves are too prominent and reminiscent of the FOIS case.

In addition to the sharp bevels that I agree are not original, I think another pointer that the case has been refinished is that the condition of the case is not consistent with the condition of other aspects of the watch e.g. the bezel (image taken from the listing on C24).

fully agree and yes the Naiad crown is origin for a -1. sometimes it helps to look into the speedmaster bible😉 just wonder if you got such watch with this great patina why on earth would you get the case polished or even exchanged?

Case refinished (Omega factory service spec).
Crown correct.
Plexi is a service part (modern logo).
Hour totalizer subdial hand is a service part.
Wrong bracelet (later).
Wrong end links (later double notch thin #6)

Is it just me or do the tips of the top lugs seem to be of different shapes? Compare the surface, the right one seems to taper a lot more than the left one.

There are several reasons to change the mid case. It could have been previously butchered during a repair. There are quite a few cases out there with glued in pushers because they had been drilled out instead of removed properly. Doing so means the correct pushers can no longer be fitted. Bad corrosion to the case back seal or crystal seat area is another reason which is very common..if the service was done by OMEGA they would not have let the watch go out that way.

Relume? Colour to even and same as hands, also inconsistent with the dial's status. The case is wrong imho.
