The more I look at it, they may be able to repair that to a nice finish, and just replace the bezel. Omega does do complete refinishing.

Does Omega stamp the same serial number or issue a new serial number when swapping out a damaged case with a new one?

Omega will reuse the original serial number on the new case. They will then retain the old case.

Ouch, that's very unfortunate. I've never dropped a watch or had a springbar give way, but I had a horror experience two weeks ago in the Zurich airport. I was wearing my new Sedna/steel Speedmaster that I got at a bargain price. Security at the Zurich airport has always been a pretty low key affair, no need to remove, shoes, belts, or empty pockets. But for some reason I tripped the metal detector, the security guy asked me to remove my wallet, and my watch. He held a small blue tray in which I put my wallet and I carefully placed the watch in it and said, "be careful". As I removed my hand and for some unknown reason the tray he was holding flipped forward and we watched the watch do a swan dive 4 ft to the hard terrazzo floor, splat, face down. Uh,oh, that can't be good. He was very apologetic, " I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was very clumsy, sorry" I reached down and picked the watch up expecting to find a shattered crystal, but no, it was intact. I quickly went back through the detector, grabbed my wallet and watch and sat down to do a thorough inspection and I could not find any ding, dent, scratch or rash anywhere. And it was still running. That was two weeks ago and it is running fine at +2 sec/day and there just is no mark on it. Why there was no damage is a mystery. Talk about luck. But I will have to start carrying a service pouch or box and take the watch off before going through security in the future, a hassle, but a necessary one.

This is why I don't wear nice watches while traveling any more. Just crappy Submariners.

Yes, I'd be interested to know the price of the case as well.
The new case and bezel should be about $2,200 USD.
I specifically requested a new case and bezel because this piece holds significant sentimental value for me. If it were a different one, I might have just opted for polishing and repair at the best instead.

However, I’m not sure Omega would do it —perhaps an unauthorized watchmaker might.

They should also reissue the same serial number on the new case. But, will keep you posted once I get it back.

Why don’t they make watch cases out of the same material that they use for cockpit voice recorders in commercial airliners? What is that stuff? Kryptonite? It seems to be able to survive anything. Hmmm. Omega, give me a call.

Watch always goes in my manpurse before I go through security- I do it discretely as I’m in line- nothing to see here, no production at the magnetometer for others to see what’s in the bin.

I had my gmt hit the tile floor going through the mag’s at work. Set it on the side stand they have for keys and phones, walked through, didn’t close my grasp fast enough in my haste to grab it and flew off the stand and down it went with gusto. It was dead- off to a $500 service it went.

The officers at work told me that the mag’s read metal in a plane and its quantitative. So if you have a belt and watch and walk through with your hands to your side- it will set it off. But if you walk through with your hands up at your chest it won’t. So now I keep the watch on and walk through like I’m doing the cha-cha.
But having to take your watch off somewhere in the security process to put it in a carryon, backpack or manpurse is just another opportunity for it to be fumbled or dropped, especially if it's a strap watch with a tang buckle. Three days after my Zurich debacle I ran into another security requirement to remove my watch at the Le Havre, France port terminal, fortunately I had time to take it off and put it in my backpack. In the future I'll put it away it before I enter the airport or port terminal, more secure and nobody is aware of a valuable cargo. I trust no one in the overbearing security process, or the nosy public looky loos.

in the airport via security I do usually put my watch into jacket pockets (winter jacket) or dip enough into my bag and no problem.

I am actually surprised how deep that scratches appear…
What kind of steel they use on watches? (I know 316, but it clearly sucks) Sometimes I do have a feeling watches could scratch from the air. Absolutely no scratch resistance to real world problems.
pity, it would cost a lot 🙁

That’s the exact opposite way I’d treat a sentimental piece. I’d want to preserve it as it was when I first got it, scratches and all. If you replace a major component every time it gets damaged, eventually you’ll end up with pretty much an entirely different watch, the ‘triggers broom’ effect

I thought about replacing it with a new case or not..., but it was severely damaged with very deep dents (maybe the picture doesn't show how deep they are). I might ask to send me the old case so I will put in a frame on the wall, lol.

They won’t return the old case as a serial number is involved.

I know what you are talking about..
I have seen plenty of used omegas with severe dents.. that’s why I raised a question about softness of the metal in the past. Easy to polish easy to put dent
I heard that’s the same problem with 904 steel softness
Definitely, I am not happy with the steel hardness in watches
Sometimes I think even my steel spoon is tougher

I don’t blame you for wanting it repaired- I wouldn’t want to live with that kind of damage (that is anything but “patina”). As it’s not that old of a watch a new case is an easy factory swap. But agree that it isn’t really the “same” watch (in its entirety) as before which has sentimental value to you. There are some watchmakers that can offer laser welding on the case ( rebuild the gouged metal, grind back down to factory specs and rebrush/polish). The results I have seen from some members here who have had it done are nothing short of amazing and most likely a bit less expense than $2k- and it is still the same watch! Worth investigating I think.

Well. I need to take the rubber strap off my Speedie and put the bracelet back on (I'm weird, I like the feeling of the metal in the winter months).

This thread has inspired me to take a quick trip to the AD tomorrow and ask them to do the job for me. Plus I want to see if they have anything interesting.

I know that they won't have the FOIS so I'm pretty safe.

I refuse to be judged on my flimsy pretences 😀

And this is more like an oil change...
