Doing a Mitsukoshi Mod...

I did a similar full mod as well some years ago: the dial and the matching hands. Liked it even better than the Mitsukoshi thanks to the red text. Stunning!

However, the fact that it was not original started to bother me more and more. So it went to a new home, I guess I then bought the Zenith EP38mm...

Not sure why a replaced dial would bother you on such an attractive mod, but everyone has their own tolerances.

Good question. The concept of (non) originality was itching. Not fully rational perhaps. But our whole watch hobby is not very rational, is it?

Many hobbies are irrational, wristwatches possibly more so.

You have the two CK2998 LE's that are Panda dials with ceramic bezel, and that's about it.

For whatever reason Omega never made many Panda dialed Speedmasters, you have the Mitsukoshi, the 35th Apollo 11, a Tokyo 2020 version, and maybe one or two others. They made some reverse Panda versions like Speedy Tuesday 1, a Tokyo 2020 version, and a few others. But it's not something that they do too often, they tend to stay with black or dark hued dials. When they do appear you have to jump on it. Unfortunately prices seem to be going up for these panda versions.

Don't forget the beautiful Gemini!

Hi guys,
I am about to get the MOD dial and hands but am unsure which Speedmaster these really fit. In this discussion I saw that people have mentioned that the Speedmaster should have a 861 or 1861 calibre. Is this definitely correct? That would mean that also both (saphire and hesalite) current 2020 Speedmaster models should be compatible right? Would be great to get your feedback. Thanks!

Hello!
Yes, the dial should fit the 1861 or 861 Calibre. It will work on both the sapphire and hesalite versions.
Good luck and show us a picture when it’s been done!

great, thanks so much for your quick feedback! Or would you prefer the 3590 or 3570 for this modification?
I’m actually first buying the dial etc and then the watch . I currently have the Speedy Tuesday 1 reverse panda and definitely not modifying that one. That’s why my thinking was to get the new standard speedy and modying that one. what are your thoughts? For which model should I rather go?

That’s totally down to your own preference - I’d see what the best deal you can get on one is.

I actually have the dial and handset and will do the mod myself at some stage.

Ok yeah, I’m still undecided but guess I’ll go with the newest Speedmaster. On what speedy do you plan to use the mod? Btw is 1.000€ a fair price for dial and hands? All are still unopened

If you are starting from scratch I'd go with a new Speedmaster, preferably hesalite. I bought an Apollo 11 35th dial modded Speedmaster earlier this year. It was a brand new conversion with the 35th dial, 50th pushers and crown, straight writing back and silver Snoopy strap. It no longer carries the 5 year Omega warranty but that's ok, if the conversion is done by a qualified Omega watch guy you'll be ok.

Can't say if the 1.000€ charge for the dial and hands are good or not, but my conversion cost about 8% less than retail. I didn't get the original dial/hands/back in the deal but got everything else including the steel bracelet and suitcase box, for what it's worth.
