Does the 'Marvin' brand ring any bells?

Marvin is an underrated brand, in my view, and their vintage offerings often represent good value. I happen to like their Flying Dutchman models (cross-marketed with KLM airlines), and you can see a couple of mine below.

The one to which you linked looks like a very nice watch. Probably borderline in terms of price, but I wouldn't be shocked if someone went for it.

Regards,

Tony C.

Hi Tony. Do you have any idea why your stainless Flying Dutchman would be labeled as an "Automatic" rather than as an "Autodate"? I just purchased the same edition watch and mine is also labeled "Automatic" but all the other samples I located are Autodates. The other difference is the applied markers at 12, 6 and 9. My watch is just a little different than yours because it actually has a trapezoidal cyclops which is pretty cool (ala Polerouter except it's exterior convex rather than interior concave). Just curious.

square cyclops is most likely a replacement.

Here's my two Marvins: A good sized (40mm) rose gold Valjoux 22 and a rose gold dress watch with fancy lugs, cal. 520:

Marvin made quite a variety of variations of the FD dials, so I expect that those were simply different production runs. As to the crystal, your trapezoidal cyclops is cool, and obviously original. Mine may not be original, though given the condition of the watch, I am not certain of that.

Cheers,

Tony

if the apollo 11 used this colorway it would have been a big hit
Agree, really like the colours on this. The macro shot gives a more accurate impression of the colour of the centre section of the dial - it’s like copper. And there’s no Buzz butt!

Great brand, in particular the Flying Dutchman 👍. My WaikUp is not too shabby either though.

The Marvin Motorist was maybe the most interesting design

Wow, never saw that one. Love it though! Apparently they were not afraid to use creative designs 👍.

Since the first tyreless one I have acquired 2 more.
Watches in tires, is that a thing? Promotional items? How interesting...

I knew about this watch from reading but I've never actually seen one — in the day (before relaunch) they had quite an adventurous design team. Totally underrated, not to say undervalued watches. Like Polerouters 5-10 years ago this company will surely surge in value and soon I suspect.

This is such a cool design by Marvin!

Has to make ya wonder what they’d be producing now if the original ‘Marvin’ had survived the ‘Quartz Crisis’.

My favorite Martian... I mean MARVIN! 😜 ..
