"So, we really look at smartwatches as a gateway drug into traditional watch purchasing."

There is an interesting industry analysis article on Hodinkee, that basically concludes that smart watches are eating into the sub-US$1000 traditional watch market, but seemingly are a gateway for first time watch wearers into the market above US$3000.
As owners of traditional watches, I'm interested to hear if you have made a foray into wearing a smart watch and why...and given that many of their features compel constant wearing, how you juggle that watch alongside your traditional watches. Also, have any of you observed the gateway phenomenon amongst people you know, as I am quite skeptical that is actually occurring.
I get that many of you distain smart watches and will never even look at one. If that's you, please refrain from commenting, as that is not really the point of this thread.

Not yet, may start to double wrist once Apple Watch 5 is around and it seems to stabilize in terms of performance (and me perceiving it even less as the disposable consumer product it is)… or not.

We shall see...

One big reason I wear traditional watches is I spend enough time looking at my phone. I see the iwatch and they do look nice. Obviously they are quality considering there are one billion apple products in the world. I hem and haw sometimes about getting one. Maybe someday but I have so many regular watches and when I look at the Apple watches I’d rather spend the cash on a decent automatic

I do. I wear a first gen Apple watch primarily to track key metrics during workouts and sometimes while traveling over multiple time zones. Owned it for 5-6 years? Routine services are promptly delivered over the high speed internet at reasonable cost 😀 If the blood pressure feature being discussed becomes a reality in tomorrow's new products announcements, then I'm definitely in for this new release! My family & friends discount is a huge motivator in my decision to purchase 😀 BTW, are there any other smart watches other than the Apple watch? 😁

I don't personally, I don't see what it would bring to the table for me that I can't do on my phone. I often wonder if people who own them use them actually use the features and get the monies worth from them.

I often wonder the same from those who own many of the various specialized mechanical watches --- take non-swimmers with dive watches, some of these watches come with depth ratings >3K meters, but many owners have no idea how to clear a dive mask in one meter of water 😲 or simple chronographs like the Speedy and the more exotic chronographs like the Breitling Rattrapante, GMTs and the many other complications -- I wonder if they get the monies worth from these watches. 😉

I don't wear any smart watch and try to minimise the amount of distractions when I'm working. Notifications are just breaking my flow. For Sport and in the Gym I have a Casio that does all I need.

I had a gen 1 Apple Watch, my son was working for the fruit company at the time. Wore it for several years, mostly tracking workouts and checking emails. Started looking at “real” watches AND got tired of always trying to fill in the stupid activity circles. My wife now has my “old” gen 1 and daughter has her “old” gen 1. Both of them use it mostly for tracking exercise. Fitbits just wouldn’t do the trick.

If I need to check my email, I look at the phone ☎️

2 younger guys at work have joined here.

One from smart watches, now owns a Longines big eye diver re-issue and has another few vintage divers already

One from quartz, now owns a modern Railmaster and has a vintage Longines 8888

The only reason I would wear an apple watch is to get it destroyed in the next NFL game I play in...

i don't wear one but i think the tech is awesome. the fitbit and heart rate stuff is pretty useful as well.

if anything i'm surprised these types of watches don't get even more of a following.

I was tired of charging things. It’s that simple.

No, I try to minimize wasting time on phones (I'd rather do it on my desk top, ultrabook or tablet). My Samsung cheap smart phone is all I need if I'm out of the house in case of emergency, no need for a smart watch at all. I do see a lot of Apple watches in the wild, but they now look pretty boring, the most interesting thing is what kind of case finish and strap people use, lots of interesting combos.

I wear a Fitbit Charge HR 3. Biggest reason is to track my sleep quality and secondary benefit is activity tracking (steps, heart-rate). I love data and it might sound a bit silly but working in a global role I travel internationally about 12 times a year and even while home it's normal to take very early calls with Asia and Europe. I have problems sleeping and without the Fitbit I would often wonder if I was sleeping too few hours or simply having terrible sleep. Having data helps me make adjustments to improve sleep and also stay focused on getting enough sleep each night (when possible).

I wear my mechanical watch on left wrist and the Fitbit is either:
- worn on my left leg under a sock, whenever wearing pants and socks
- worn on my right wrist when wearing shorts and/or no socks.

No way am I adding another surveillance device to my body - the phone is bad enough! Planning on giving up the smartphone for Lent next year too, just to remind myself what the analog world is like.

Same here. Only that it is a fitbit alta HR and that it is worn always on the right wrist.

Sleep tracking is incredible. Wanted to be able to do this for years in the past. Now this is helping me a lot.
