Wow. That is a shock...can’t ever forget goals against England in 86 World Cup. Utterly bewildering.

Never liked the guy (especially as an Englishman), but you couldn’t dispute his outstanding ability. RIP to an outstanding player & cheat.

to the guys calling him a cheat...no comment. With VAR, a lot of things wouldn't have counted, his hand of God goal, the 66 World Cup England won, etc. Focusing strictly on his talent, he is and will remain a legend, one of the best and arguably the best player to have played the game. Natural talent, I think he may be the best we've seen. Imagine what this guy would have done if he was sober and focused, seems like he played for the simple joy of playing. Gracias Diego!!

One of my childhood football idols along with M. Platini. Perhaps the most memorable World Cup performance in recent memory to will the team to a title in '86. He will be missed.

I'm a little surprised he lived this long. He was definitely an inspiration in my youth. He was also a great illustration of playing on until you hear a whistle. I think that was the most important lesson.

With instant replay today the chances of becoming infamous as he did are greatly diminished. Unfortunately the drugs/ cartel buddies really killed any respect I had for him later in life.

As a young kid who grew up next to the stadium of Ajax I saw players like Van Basten, Bergkamp and even Cruyff play. But the best I've ever saw in football was Diego. A man of the people with all his shortcomings. But what a player.

I think it would have been better if he had said ok I cheated, I wanted to win, I should not have done it.....blah blah blah, but no he reveled in it, and acted like it was nothing. If he was such a great footballer why did he need to do that?

He didn't do it, God did. Diego was just the conduit.

If memory serves me right, there was more than just football in it!

RIP Diego, Legends like him will be talked about forever.

It's a strange coincidence that on this day 15 years ago the greatest footballer from the Island of Ireland died, the legendary George best.

Diego was 60 and George 59.
