My father used to hate going to social gatherings with non-doctors because everyone had a mole, freckle or boil they wanted looked at while he was holding his cocktail by the pool.

My wife has absolutely threatened my life if I mention she's an RN at get-togethers. If I'm pissed at her it's the first thing I mention -- and I am usually dying laughing at parties if I look across the room and some random human is pulling at their sweater while pointing at a spot on their neck while my wife is trying to look interested -- that is until we leave and my ass is grass.

All those and you forgot the two most requested...

1. "How do I wind my watch?"

2. "Can I wash my hands with a Speedmaster?"
You can wash your hands, but don’t even think about snorkeling with it ::stirthepot::

How about "Soap and hot water is more effective."?

My deflection for anyone learning I've been in computer software development since 1973 is that I don't know anything about computers that take less space than two large filing cabinets and don't run on 3-phase.

For those who know that's not true, and crucially I would actually like to help them, my response is "Buy a new one to decent spec and I'll help you move your files from old to new."

Okay fine, but can I stroke my snorkel while wearing my Speedmaster?

Hah! I was going to add my dad's quandary for the entirety of his professional life along with my wife's as an RN...

growing up as the son of a CPA I never understood why my friend's dads weren't pissed off when my friend or friend's mom called them to the phone.
In our house there were two Dad Rules:
1. He never answered the phone, ever. And he didn't, ever.
2. He was not home or was occupied unless it was a blood relative - and even then we were to ask "what they needed" and if any part of their reason for calling was related to finances... yep, you guessed it, he wasn't home or was otherwise occupied.

All said, if you wanted to truly piss off my dad (and man the ramifications were deep and vast) you called him to the phone for a client who had "gone rogue" and called our home number for financial information.
My mom would do it often when they were not getting along.

That has got to be the worst of them as it's the most relevant profession to everyone and in their mind- you must have an encyclopedic knowledge of not just federal, but every state’s tax codes. They can clearly see you enjoy giving out free services during your social time.

It’s so much worse now than it’s ever been. So many people working from home in different states from their jobs are getting screwed by both states.

I’m just glad I chose a state with no personal income tax. Gives me an easy excuse.

“I don’t know”.

Truth (as stated above in my reply to @gatorcpa )...
I never got my ass deeper in the vault of hellfire than when in 4th grade, for a book report, I selected Certified Public Accounting. And ended it with a declaration that "my dad loves his job so much he would do all the teachers taxes for free!"
A couple days later my dad came home from work and sat me down and sternly asked why his secretary had received multiple calls from various teachers at Nelson Hill Elementary School?
That's when I received "The Talk".

Wife is from the rectum of Michigan, aka: Flint, and we seldom can conjure up any decent reason for a visit... but with a bunch of watch nerds as fodder this might be a doable thing.

One suggestion that might be a seriously fun idea -- rent a fleet of bicycles from a LBS and have not only the First Detroit OF GTG but the first ever OF GTG Bike Ride... Sept in Michigan would make for a fun & easy roll through whatever location was selected -- stopping for photos, coffee, beer, etc.

Yes. Unlike the nurses, doctors, accountants and watchmakers who will not get burdened by our questions, Mad Dog will be giving a presentation on how to be awesome.

Indeed. In addition to watches, I sell buggies, horses, various tack, farm implements and simple clothing with hooks and eyes because buttons are too proud. 😀 In all seriousness, the Amish are some of the most respectable and respectful people that you could ever hope to meet. Although I certainly wouldn't want to adopt their very simple lifestyle, they really take care of their own and there is no poverty, no violent crime, no addictions, no homelessness, etc. among them. When you look at modern socieity, it's not hard to figure out why they chose to isolate themselves in closed communities long ago.

Hi all,

Just seeing this now and getting caught up. I'm in the metro Detroit area, and as @Mad Dog has said, he and I have gotten together a couple of times already. I'd be happy to help coordinate, and if we decide on the northern suburbs (Troy, Birmingham, Royal Oak areas), I'll throw in a sweetener for anyone who has an interest in architecture: a personal tour of Cranbrook, my workplace and my home. It's a well-known example of mid-century modern design, and features some of the best Art Deco architecture in the world.
