I don't have the energy to worry about what I can't have or afford, but there are still loads of nice watches I like.

They may not have the same Pondus as Rolex or Omega but still plenty of nice watches out there. I like Tudor watches and the latest offering from Fortis is stunning in my opinion. The Rado True Square would scratch an itch. Unimatic.

If Rolex watches become available at RRP then I will be happy to buy them, but at present, they are not so I will just enjoy spending my money on what is available and enjoy those watches instead.

Surely this will come to an end when the economy takes a bath at some point?

Well there seems to be a cliff pretty soon, especially if china decides to attack Taiwan.

But I honestly find watches to be a sustainable hobby when it comes to fixing them. At least you can fix them to make them work again, some hobbies are just a dead end, once it’s broken that’s it.

Still waiting for gold to drop back to $350/ounce.

If only there were a thread around here that could tell us exactly how it all works…

You must have a great relationship with your AD. This just gets you on the damn waitlist with mine. 👎

I feel that AD’s are just gate keeping the watches, I legit hate sucking up towards an AD just to possibly buy something I guess. I mean that’s just off putting I guess, granted Rolex is not moving up production since they look at a 100 years down the road but still, I really want to know what the guys who do frequently buy all these watches, they certainly don’t put that collection show off here lolol

I've read accounts of some AD's who are actually trying not to sell to flippers, and who are blacklisting buyers who flip the watch quickly. I do think this is the minority of the AD's though (just my opinion) and that most are taking full advantage of this situation.

The guys who are buying all the watches are likely selling them to grey dealers, if they aren't the actual dealers themselves.

Interestingly enough I always get curious whenever an AD loses their Rolex license, the choices in my city have shrunk colossally!!

Then sometimes I wonder how stores like Rolex Deutsch & Deutsch or Rolex Wempe keep their lights on with the “shortage”

Some of them don't loose the license. They forgo their license. Rolex asks for $500K plus a dedicated space/ store front for Rolex within the store with dedicated team. Now, imagine you're a small store and have to do that and then you don't get more than a handful of watches to sell even year. It's just not worth it.

Here in Michigan Ahee chose to not carry Rolex anymore for that same reason. They have a terrific Patek selection and Cartier and a few other brands but not Rolex. Too much of a hassle for little return.

They are getting the watches they always got. They are just selling them all before they ever hit the shelves for display. There's never been a better time to be a Rolex AD - you sell pretty much everything the brand sends you. It's essentially a license to print money, and any AD who tells you that they willingly gave that up, I would take with a large grain of salt.

As always the universe comes to a balance, and Rolex’s purported “headaches” are surely roughly proportional to their benefits - while the “easiest” brands are similarly surely roughly proportional to their inventory risk, MSRP risk, etc.

No free lunches!
