Dude, that's old school! Nowadays, you just post something on the internet for a lambasting - no matrimony necessary.

I'm bowing out of this thread because I've said what I wanted to and feel no need to repeat myself. I'm leaving you all with a couple thoughts about trying to change internet attitudes....

1) Mark Manson explained it better than I ever could: https://markmanson.net/internet

2) A picture speaks a thousand words, and this captures what I think about trying to change the way people post anywhere:

Augh

Dennis

Its not about changing the way people post.....

But just for them to take a breath before hitting the post button...and that they are aware...

only way I can try to do that is make it visible to all who wants to read the thread.

its a global village and Change is your friend.

Best

Bill, you are asking people to change the way they post.... and that's not going to happen. Read the link from Mark Manson for the perfect explanation.

We're going around in circles and I'm getting dizzy. Believe it or not, I tried the same thing on a watch forum and a wine forum and was chastised, laughed at, and derided. The one quote that stuck with me is "This isn't Wine Nice Guys, it's Wine Berserkers!".

On the other hand, I really like it when members call out others. I think the Squirrel, The Lizard and The Longhorn from the Lone Star State and others aren't afraid to call people out and I appreciate it. I also fell like things have calmed down in the last year or so. I remember a time when if you didn't have a profile picture you would be told pretty quickly and forget about getting an answer to your question.

In other words, I think we are getting a little soft...

I'm all for a good heated argument and getting a beer after. I hate soft people that get offended by the slightest comment or question and fell attacked all the time. To me, that's a sign that something is wrong and perhaps that person is hiding something.

very well said. today one need to encourage everbody who's able to draw a potato (alone !) .... very disappointing. most don't know how to handle criticism

Hold on - I've had an epiphany! I know how to accomplish exactly what Bill wants: only protocol droids are allowed to post!

That will enhance the politeness immensely, and virtually eliminate any negative vibes.

I love droids, though R2D2 is my fav.

I point out to my daughters as often as I can that we are surrounded by droids, just not ones that can talk. Dishwashers, toasters, cars.

Dennis ,

The point is to get the thought out there. That is all....

As I said in the past .... its like a buffet the stuff you like you consume. The stuff you dont like you pass it by.

Just the act of talking about it is great..... everyone will make whatever decision and go on....

I am glad you tried in your past attempts... so have I.

Good Hunting

Hi Dennis

The sad part is you really dont understand what I want....

its more like tag line on the G.I. Joe cartoon " Knowing is half the battle ..."

Bill,
You're confusing the hell out of me. If it's not about changing the way people post then what are you trying to change? The way they think, react, respond? Whichever it is, it will affect they way they post.

It's obvious that some of us have thicker skin than others but that's humanity, like it or not. Trying to change that, well, let me refer you back to Dennis' Don Quixote reference.

Sorry but I can't help myself after seeing that...
(They are (subjectively) hilarious voice-overs)
Edit: Some NSFW language included.

So, I've been a member for a little more than a year, and really appreciate this community because it is a community. I have seen people cross the line on occasion, and I have also seen experienced collectors come to the aid of total newbies, saving them thousands of dollars and a whole ton of hassle.

This is an interesting question to ask. Nobody wants this forum bogged down with stupid questions and pointless, repetitive threads. But are there important discussions that are not started on the forum because people don't want to be smacked down? If some folks ease off a bit, would it add to the richness of discussion and benefit all members?

I don't have the answers - and don't know who does. But to Bill's point, it is worth thinking about.

I think Bill's point isn't that we should humor all noobs (which all of us were noobs at one point), but that there is a difference between saying "Please read the stickies" and "Guess you didn't read the sticky, huh?"

Softer approach I get it, not the full tin foil approach 😉

My take is, anytime you post on social media you put yourself at risk. There are many douchebags and toughguys behind the keyboard, if you are sensitive to name calling or being bashed it's simple don't post on the internet. It would be nice if everything was rainbows and unicorns, but it's not and never will be....

I find both these responses equally friendly.

"Read the stickies, you ##@&& **^ %%$#" would be a contrasting answer, & something I would never post.
