I see there is a "High End Watches" channel/section as well as "Other Watch Brands Forum" section. Just curious if there is a certain threshold or groups of brands/models that are only seen/discussed in one vs. the other? Or is it more of a "know it when you see it" group culture kind of thing? Thanks!
All of my watches apparently fall into the “other category” as I’m not cool enough to roll with the big boys.
Me too, and I believe us bargain hunters have lovingly been called dumpster divers. All in good fun though. Even our high end collectors are pretty unpretentious.
I think the high end forum is mostly for Patek, Lange, etc., and threads there don't necessarily get a lot of visibility TBH.
Honestly @kohster , this group is pretty egalitarian. I think “high end” is anything haute horology. All of the mass produced brands have their own sub-forums and then there are the “others” which can be anything from vintage esoteric to microbrands- no snobbery applied, just not enough individual brand demand to warrant its own sub-category (Seiko finally got its own sub last year). They still don’t seem to value Bulova as a vintage brand worth giving any love which is a topic with which I take issue.
Perhaps we should combine the Rolex and Steinhart threads in that sub-forum. Maybe even cross-link the Seiko Submariner mods. Nothing pisses people off, who take themselves too seriously, more than being lumped in with the hoi-polloi
Timex Marlin. nothing says blue collar hoi-palloi like a nice (still ticken’) Marlin. I keep mine out at the trailer...
It is "know it when you see it". Just create a thread in the wrong place and see what happens. Men in black following you, the distant muted sound of an helicopter... Or is it just an attempt by admins to have less clutter
My interpretation PP, AP, VC, JLC ( yes they belong here), ALS and all the smaller nose bleed priced brands.
Not to worry, @kohster. To ensure you’re quickly directed to the correct thread, begin a post with ‘my neighbor’s father’s great uncle left me this watch. Is it worth anything?’
That’s a good way to increase post count- another good one is “I read an article that said I can get rich selling watches. Can you all please tell me where to buy cheap watches, which ones to buy and where to sell them for maximum profit”.
Awesome advice, James. This will assist those getting into watches based solely on investment potential. Their key to success.
