IS this ghost bezel a 'real' one - I know this is open to a very wide interpretation - and therefore of benefit? This factor had attracted me to the watch..

I totally was on the wrong track re. 'stepped' dial in this 1971 realize its the main dial and not sub dials which was my initial understanding.

Is it overvalued if a decent price (max 1000 usd) correct dial can be found given that the 1971 version of this watch is less in numbers than say 1969? Plus what would be a 'normal' price for an intact 1971 with correct dial? Likely above 3K but how much.. again dependent on interpretation.. this case has good edges.. 馃槈

Missing the correct dial significantly affects price.

As Ghost dials are created from friction wear on the bezel you expect the inside of the bezel to be darker. This bezel seems consistent to have been naturally occurring. Blue bezels are the ones I think have been faked.

A correct dial I assume would be in the $650-800? plus range but odds are it's lume ageing would not match the hands.

-69 and -71 had the same dial.

P.S.

I also though the step was a subdial thing for a few hours and racked my brain trying to figure it out until I noticed the minute track step.

The ghost dial looks identical to my -71. I like the gohst dial.

Stepped dial rising in price, like all speedmaster parts.

Hard to say whether the bezel was faded naturally - the insert is clearly peeling between 12 and 2 o'clock in the photos, which is unusual; and the heavy cosmetic work in the dial and hands makes me suspicious - also because:

this case has good edges

This case has edges that were polished to appear original. This was disclosed in the listing, and was skillfully done IMO, but it's still a polished case

Drinking tonight.

Celebrating 50th birthday.

Nice! Happy 50th! And thanks for the feedback. I like the bezel. Disappointed in the dial but see very few if any '71 for sale with correct dial. I reckon hunt the gen dial and maybe need new hands.. intention is also to wear it.. maybe I can get it back to unpolished 馃槈 - OR maybe soon everyone will tire of unpolished.. then can sell it before everyone polishes theirs. 馃槈 !!

Thanks for the feedback. I've seen a few listings on eBay and Chrono where the bezels are peeling.. seems normal? Yep the finishing of the case with edges is perhaps more attractive to some than merely polished generally.

Nice looking watch - you just got the stepped dial recently?
