Case back watchmaker markings

I had two Swatch Group watches serviced in the last few years. One Longines and a warranty service with Hamilton. Both came back with a 7 or 8 digit number marked in the caseback, which coincides with the service or work order number for the service department. Now they just use a sharpie marker instead of scratching or engraving.
