I was faced with the same choice 12 years ago and I also have a smaller wrist. I went with the 2254 and have never regretted it for the following reasons:
- height - the 2254 is already a chunky watch. I happen to like chunky watches but the PO is just too tall.
- dial - the 2254 has one of the nicest dials in the history of Omega dive watches. I have quite a few vintage pieces but the 2254 is already a classic in my opinion. I don't feel the same way about the flat black on the PO.
- bracelet - the 2254 double row, polished links are the nicest design of the modern Omega bracelets and the alignment to the Speedy connects both of these iconic models.
- crystal - the AR coating on the top of the crystal kind of defeats the purpose of having sapphire. I would prefer the plain, hard sapphire of the 2254, or acrylic of the moon watch, that can be polished over the AR coated crystal of the PO.

Good luck with your choice. I realize that style is very subjective and I apologize in advance if I have offended and PO owners as both models are excellent watches.
Thanks very much @amcclell this has been really helpful and further cements my decision to go down the 2254 route 馃榾. Everything you listed makes a lot of sense to me and has been most useful!
Equally no offense intended to the PO owners and a further apology to this thread - didn't mean to hijack it at all, got excited by all the strap variants on the 2254 and carried away!

I think you might be the first person to call the 2254 Seamaster a chunky watch.

I thought that too! I thought it was one of the slimmest available.

The 2254 may be among the slimmest of the modern dive watches but the last 20 years have seen record growth in size and weight. When you compare watches produced over the past 80 years, the 1970's saw cases grow in bulk and the past 20 years has seen a further increase. I have approx. 20 watches from the 1930's to the 2000's and my 2254 is among the largest. My 1993 El Primero Rainbow and 1973 El Primero Surf are the only others that compete size and height-wise. I have other dive watches and dress watches from the 1950s-70's and the 2254 is the upper limit for me.

So many nice straps in this thread! I think I will be sticking with the bracelet for the long haul though! I switched it out for a leather strap today to see if I liked it and it took me about an hour to get the bracelet it off and back on again (thought it would be a 5 minute job like my other watches). Lucky I love the bracelet!

Haha yeah, the bracelet is not the easiest to get off and on....I know because i just did this yesterday! I picked up a rubber strap off Etsy from a UK shop that arrived on Monday. I think it really looks the part, however it's not as comfortable as I hoped it would be, like the OEM strap or a Zealande, but it was also less than $60. I don't know, i may keep this rubber on for a while but generally I do prefer bracelets anyways. Or if I convince myself to drop $170 on a Zeanlande, the white looks awesome on this, great summer look.

There are those who promote 19mm pins for the bracelet and 20mm for a Nato. This is often heard in connection with a Speedmaster. Given it is the same bracelet... Anyhow.

have fun

Purchased in 2008, this was my first Omega. I love my Speedy and the three vintage '60's Omegas I own, but this is the one I'll never part with.

For 20mm lugs, my Omega Boutique recommends 19mm spring bars for bracelets and 20mm for straps (leather, fabric, etc.). I鈥檝e found this to work quite well.

I've always wondered why the speedy bracelet is so popular on the Seamaster, yet seems pretty unpopular on the Speedy(maybe not here so much but certainly in general)? Is it just that it suits the Seamaster better?

I've never had one on my Seamaster but have owned a couple of Speedys in the past with it. I did like it but one thing I remember disliking was I seemed to constantly feel the need to adjust the bracelet even with the additional half link I bought for it, and also I seem to remember it could look a little awkward on my slim wrist with those rigid bracelet ends.

I keep being tempted to get another for my Great White which should have one(in fully brushed form)and they are still available, but at the same time feel ill probably still prefer the Omega shark mesh.

Probably because the Speedy has been around since the 1960鈥檚 and a lot of people like the vintage bracelet look on the Speedy.

Yeah I 100% agree. I've never been a big fan of the Bond bracelet, so getting this bracelet has reignited my love of this watch.

The Speedmaster has seen better-looking (though not better-built) bracelets in the past, and its look is still a classic vintage look that matches those bracelets. As such, many owners (myself included) dream of that look on them.

The Seamaster.....I can only speak for myself, but I've never liked the overly-complex "Bond" seamaster bracelet. When I got my 300m (current generation), my initial response was "oh, good, it doesn't look nearly as bad in person", and though it feels amazing (particularly with the micro-adjust clasp), I've never fallen in love with it. The Speedmaster bracelet looks......less bad? Personally I think the Planet Ocean gets it right with an Oyster-style bracelet. If Omega sold a PO-style bracelet that fit the 300m I'd be all over it.

2254 on Brown Leather - got a Bergeon 6111 tool which made getting the bracelet off a much easier task!
Still think I will end up with a shark mesh strap at some point 馃榿
