Cal 861 chrono issue on my Speedmaster 145.022.

My Speedmaster’s chrono seconds hand randomly began to reset 1-2 seconds behind the 12 (eg when I reset the chrono, the chrono seconds hand resets to 58 or 59 seconds instead of the 12 o’clock position).

I had three watchmakers at a local shop look at it (two are WOSTEP and OMEGA certified). After their work, it does not reset 2 seconds behind, but it is almost always a little off center - most times, the seconds hand resets towards the left side of the 12 o’clock lume. All of the watchmakers claimed not to notice it was off when resetting (personally, I think they were stumped and wanted it out of their shop). They are basically advising me this is normal for an aging chronograph but it may need a new gear at its next full service, and to not worry about it. (It may be worth mentioning here they just did a full service 1.5 years ago and have a 2 year warranty — I can’t help but wonder if they just don’t want to stand behind the warranty when they can’t figure out the problem).

I was going to follow their advice and write it off, but when using the chrono today, the seconds hand now begins to run the wrong direction for a brief moment when I run the chronograph! It then runs “normally” after that.

Watch is running fine and keeping excellent time aside from this chrono issue. Has anyone run into a problem like this? Thoughts on sending it off to OMEGA? Wasn’t sure if they’d require a full service in order to look at it.

This will be the 5th time the watch needs a service in my 7 years of ownership. It runs so beautifully well and keeps immaculate time when it doesn’t have its crystal popping off, crown pulling out when I go to set the time, chrono pushers wiggling, etc. Always something with this watch.

If the hand is moving from it's normal home position at 12 when reset, it can be for 2 reasons:

1 - The tube of the hand is loose, and the hand either needs to be tightened, or replaced.
2 - The rivet of the hand where it meets the tube is loose, and it needs to be tightened or replaced.

The problem of the hand moving backwards when you start the chronograph is unrelated to the problem of the reset position. This can be caused by excess oil on the hammer and cam, or magnetism, so the first thing I would do is demagnetize the watch.

These things aren't normal, so you may need to find another watchmaker.
