As a 20 year old at the beginning of my collecting career this thread feels like a depressing glimpse of my future.
It is not too late... run now

The collection is still evolving, but seems to be in a vintage chronograph stage at the moment.

My wife recently read a book about decluttering and while I was sceptical at first, she told me a bit about it and it actually made a lot of sense. It can basically be summed up thusly: if it doesn't bring you joy (literally, hold it in your hand and see) then get rid of it. The more that you strip away everything but the things that give you joy it becomes easier to focus on the things that do. I have started to apply that mantra to my collection. I've got a ways to go, but I think a collection of 7-10 pieces that bring me joy is where I'm headed.

Great post @watchknut and thanks for those who participated

Absurd, man! Each one has new things to be discovered, and that's a joy! To de-clutter is a failure of observation.

Touché, @LouS!

Waking the wife up now to 'engage' in a healthy discussion about the unsung merits of repetitive observation. "How can you be sure it won't bring you joy the next time you pick it up".

Standby for response...😉

Oh man! 🙁 I was going to try and adopt the de-clutter ethos but this simple statement has thrown me right off track.

My collection/hoard, from memory

Tag Heuer Kirium (Blue)
Seiko 6105's (1x 8000, 1x 8110 wearers; 2x quality 8110 bought for their original rubber straps and never worn; at least 3x others in various lessor states)
105-012-65 - 2x
Transitional '68
'69 Speedy
MkII Speedy (Exotic/Racing)
3x MKIII's awaiting total restoration
Flightmaster (911)
Constellation (gold capped, linen dial, c751?)
SM300 (possibly original case and movement, replacement/Watchco dial and hands)
Cosmic
Ladies Seamaster 120 😵‍💫

2x Movado Datron HS360 (17J & 31J)

Fantome chronograph (7750)
Baylor chronograph (Camaro)
Glycine chronograph (Camaro)

2x Doxa 300 - both US Divers Co/Aqua Lung Sharkhunters
Helson Sharkmaster 1000
Bulova Snorkel/Deep Sea

Wittnauer Electro-Chron (Thunderbolt/Lightning hands) boxed set

2x G-Shock - 1x beater (awaiting replacement battery), 1x "Bumblee" still boxed 🤨

Incoming:
Wittnauer chronograph

Still in UK and unseen (Family assisted hoarding 😟)
Ed White
Heuer Camaro
Seiko "issued" Gen 1 chronograph
Desotos chronograph (7750)

Only sold four, I think;

2x Vulcain chronographs. Lovely dials and hands but chrome cases, which I didn't realise before purchasing.

Regretted:
1x Exotic MKII Speedmaster to TomGW answering a WTB on another forum. What became of this one Tom?

1x Hamilton chronograph to Fred. Thought it was too small at the time but didn't give it enough chance 🙁

Stupid, stupid boy :whipped:
Never, ever, ever de-clutter.

[Credit to Simon, foxy100, for the pic when he owned it. I've seen him post his regret about letting it go too.]

@styggpyggeno1 , when I first started reading, I thought the numbers to the right were counts. Impressive collection!

Me too!

Prices keep going up
and interest rates lower, so what's the point in selling.

Until last week I felt a little bad about having turned nearly all my savings into watches. Then I got negative interest from my bank 🫨

Screw that, I'll buy more watches.

Great thread !
It is all in there.

All in all, I have bought a lot, sold a lot. And kept some.
I managed to finance the collection with my little business.

Nothing as impressive as some of the members here but we've got to start somewhere. Contrary to most of you, my fiancée is the one that got me addicted (Oh well it's not like this forum helped the addiction).

His:
1 1960 Waltham Chronograph (Poormans something)
1 Glycine Triple date disk
1 Tudor Oyster Royal
1 Frédérique Constant Ultraslim Monophase (It's been at the AD for three months, waiting for a custom made bracelet for my small wrist)
6 Universal Geneve
- Polerouter SS Cal. 68 (I should put that one below because I'm not wearing it)
- Polerouter Gold plated Cal. 215
- Polerouter SS Cal 215
- Gold plated Cal. 332 ref. 406511/2
- SS 138ss Bumper
- SS Cal 262 (in coming)

Her's:
Baume et Mercier Linea
Bulgari CarbonGold Roma 1884
Universal Geneve Compax
Mido Multisport

My first thought was "no way am I going to count 'em". But then it occurred to me that I could break them down into broader categories, and still provide an interesting snapshot.

Apparently no one can accuse me of not being eclectic!

I've got a few that I'm gonna sell that I don't really want to list here. Either I bought them because they were photogenic or I thought I would like them on my wrist and didn't. Whatever; I'm just going to list my keepers:

9 Omegas
2 Longines
3 Bulovas
3 Hamiltons
1 Bucherer
1 Vulcain
2 Wittnauers
1 Seiko
2 Benrus
1Unitas
1 Imperial
1 Wakmann

I don't think of my self as a collector simply because I don't really have a plan or desire to acquire certain watches. I just get a kick out of mechanical watches from the mid 1960's to the early 1970's with a few older pieces because I like the styling. I like a minimum size of around 33mm and a maximum of about 40mm. Again there are exceptions. I also don't care if the brand was or is fairly pedestrian like the Benrus or if it's not "desirable" like late C shape Connies. I do enjoy trying to learn about the brand history and the characteristics of the movements. I like alarm watches now more than the chronographs when I started accumulating these little marvels. Still am a sucker for a chronograph though.

Nor will I, if I really like the watch, get my panties all in a bunch if the dial is refinished. I've got a 1972 Dynamic that I think has a refinshed dial, my Omega certified watchmaker says no way - its factory original. If he'll ever finish the rehab on the movement and give it back to me I plan on putting it on this board for analysis but in any case I'm in love with that watch - pointy 'A's and all.

I think it was member @Syrte that hit my nail on the head with the label 'enthusiast"

"Enthusiast" is indeed my label of choice... glad if it hits a chord for others -- no copyright on it 😀
