Buying my husband a Speedmaster... Advice Needed

buying presents is a minefield, but what a nice gesture! I would not discount going to your local brick and mortar shop. I have bought most of my watches used from internet forums and ebay, and I wish I had spent more time at my local authorized dealer. I would be a lot closer to the top of the list when it comes to ordering special editions and desirable watches. There is quite a long line for some models, including special edition speedmasters.
I think one of the best values would be a late 70s Speedy Pro. Just around your price range, and it has not entered into the silly sphere of cal 321 and Ed Whites.

Please, we already decided against vintage.

I'm ok with the opinion of some members :

DON'T buy the reduced (Automatic). Not that is is crap, but it's definitly not THE speedmaster.
if you don't know much about speedies, ask us our opinion on what you see/have seen
you should get a modern speedy for less than $4000
And hesalite crystal is much better for a lot of reasons
as for chosing a transparent caseback, it's not very difficult to add one later on if needs be. it will require a extra spare part to put in on, a specila casing ring. Not very expensive. Seing the movement can be fun for a watch freak.
finding a anny speedy (your wedding, a special event like the boirth of a child, his birth year) would be nice. Just be aware that roughly the odler it is the more expensive.
I wouldn't have original caseback engraved or would save one new aside just in case of.
if ever you have a extra budget, buying a 57 could be an idea. to say it shortly, it's the clone of the original one

cheers

Contact @Kringkily and ask him to source 1 of 2 things

1) a NIB (new in box/full omega warranty) Speedmaster 311.30.42.30.01.005. This is the latest version on a bracelet. This will be several hundered less than $4000. He just sold one for $3500. This will have the engraving on the back. Not sure why this is a potential dealbreaker.

2) a NIB Speedmaster "First Omega in Space". This is a reissue of one of the first Speedmasters and has some minor cosmetic differences than the regular Moonwatch. However it won't have the First Watch on the Moon engraving ( Why is this such an issue?)

The watch you posted is a Speedmaster Reduced. Lots of threads about it but generally to be avoided as it is smaller than the original Moonwatch and has an expensive + hard to service movement.

Has anyone NOT had a good experience with Krinkily? Bank transfers from an online forum make me nervous...

Nothing that I've heard about.

I can understand your reservations about wiring someone money sight unseen, but rest assured that dealers like Kringkily can be trusted, 100%. 👍 It would not be in their best interests to scam someone when their reputation / business is on the line. All it takes is one bad experience, after all...

If you look at the sales feedback thread you will see he’s got a great reputation. I wired money for the first time last year for a watch and it is nerve wracking but if you have a reputable seller who communicates with you it should be easy.

@Kringkily has helped other wives/spouses with surprises before.

Why don't you want the First Watch On The Moon engraving? Personally, if you're spending that kind of money, get the professional, not the automatic. Pro is preferred by most watch nerds.

100% agree . Sound advice

100% trustworthy.

100s if not 1000s of transactions on this and other forums. I bought a 3750 and my wife surprised me with a seamaster 2254 from him. Close to $5000 in sales. Wasn’t worried for a second.

I probably sound like some sort of shill but I’m just a happy customer

What a beautiful gesture. Not only saving and squirreling away for years, but taking the time to really dive in, do some research and make it count. He will never forget this.

I think you’re getting enough excellent advice in this thread, and surely have a full inbox to match. So I’ll resist the urge to add my own, and just congratulate you on your 10 years of Hesalite - doh!, MARRIAGE.

Good luck!!!

I replied to your PM re Kringkily.
The process and after sale follow up was excellent. I was nervous as well - and there was no reason to be.

Hi @Antigua08 and welcome to the forum.

I just wanted to add a couple of points to help you decide which Speedmaster you really want.

First, don't worry about budget. Unless you wanted a good vintage example (which you don't), you've got enough there to get a great watch.

Second, you need to understand that there are (very basically) two types of Speedmaster: the "professional" and the automatic or "reduced". To get a grasp of the differences, here's a bit of a history lesson: the original Speedmaster from 1957 all the way through to today is a manual winding watch. To make it go, you turn the crown and wind the spring. This is the watch that people know as " the" Speedmaster. Later, Omega brought out another version of the Speedmaster with an automatic movement. This watch is physically smaller (hence the name "reduced" ). The more complicated movement also results in higher maintenance costs; the dial has a different layout ;and, all in all, it is generally less desirable. Obviously i donkt know your husband but if heks a watch nerd then hekll be lusting after the professional and not the reduced.

Next, to the engraving on the back. To commemorate the moon landings in 1969 and to create more of a buzz about the Speedmaster, Omega added the engraving to the caseback in 1971. This is when the Speedmaster became known as the "Moonwatch". All Speedmasters after 1971 will have that engraving, unless it was a special, or limited, edition. If the engraving is a real deal breaker, look for the limited editions.

Finally, there are a few different sales sections on the forum. You won't have the privileges to write on those sections but you can view them. Take some time and have a look at the photographs - see what you think he would like the best. Then, come back here once you've narrowed down your wish list and the group can give you some more focused advice.
Alright.... I'm close! I am planning to go with a new Speedy Pro. @Kringkily has a .005 and the .001, the steel bracelet/leather strap models. I think I plan to go with the steel bracelet, but any other thoughts or considerations before I pull the trigger?

Good choice on the bracelet. It will be much more expensive to buy separately. Otherwise just talk to George (@Kringkily ) and he will guide you through the process.

I know this seems insane, wiring money to a stranger on the internet hoping a watch shows up 2 days later...

But in reality “trusted sellers” are small businesses. Some have websites and physical locations and others just sell on the forums.

They won’t rip you off because they are honest people running a business. That’s why “buy the seller” is repeated ad nauseam.

Everything will be fine and in a month you will be advising new members to contact a trusted seller for their first purchase.

I have been watching this thread from the beginning and I believe you have done a great job figuring out exactly what you want/need.
Definitely go for the bracelet. As mentioned above, it would be more expensive to buy later.
And besides, there are soooooo many options for leather straps if your husband wants to switch it up. Easy to do.

You should definitely go with the bracelet version... to purchase it after the fact would be very expensive... your only viable option would be to buy an Omega-made bracelet (because the endlinks must fit specifically to the Speedmaster).

Non-Omega quality leather straps can easily be bought from literally hundreds of strapmakers for anywhere from $50 to $300, depending upon how much you want to spend.

For some ideas of what straps to buy and some places to condsider buying them from, see this thread here:

https://omegaforums.net/threads/whats-your-favourite-strap-for-your-speedy.56030/

It would be really cool if you bought a couple leather straps to give him along with the watch... most Speedy owners love it because it’s an incredibly versatile timepiece that can work with almost any kind of strap.

My personal recommendation would be to connect with Ivan here: https://www.twostitchstraps.com/

His price to quality ratio is excellent. The Speedy looks incredible on his Honey and Coal straps... just be sure to ask for his expedited shipping as he’s based out of Serbia and standard mail can be a little slow to arrive from there.
