Thanks. PayPal have frozen his account and funds. I have copied my police report to them. Linked to chrono listing, his correspondence, watchmaker report and this thread plus detailed outline of why this is not a “1968 big triangle military” as advertised.

Good work!

He become quite chatty since paypal froze his funds! I will get a certificate of "non-authenticity" (is that a thing?) from the omega agent today to confirm with paypal.

If PayPal is taking it seriously, don’t do anything with this deuche, or even reply until PayPal gives you instructions. Don’t send him the watch or even mention that you will “do anything”. It is up to them to dictate the terms at this point, particularly if they want you to send the watch to their fraud department.

Although I dislike Paypal in several ways, in this case Paypal could be a great solution. Hope it will work out for you! Good luck!

Would love to see them, especially grandpa's Longines and dad's GP; please post pics.

You're not an idiot, people get scammed all the time. You've paid the "newbie tax," do what you can to return the watch, get a refund and/or be made whole, and move on. If you're still interested in pursuing vintage watches, make sure you read through "Learn How to Fish," and look carefully at every other example of the same reference before you buy, so you can see what's different between those and the one you're considering:

Ha corrected once again, this time by Dad who was remarkably sympathetic and has many more years of cynicism, mostly about long case clocks which he calls "marriages" where the movement does not match the case! Anyway he shared some pics of the Longines (it was the Congo not the upper Nile) and his GP (graduation not 21st apparently). Here they are ...

Is there anyone in this forum who has the credentials to provide “proof” to PayPal that the watch I purchased is not as described by the seller?

I have provided the police report, the original description, the watchmakers report, the link to this thread and my conversation with the seller and a comment by Marcus Alexander. (It’s a bad fake) (Thanks for the connection) my local watchmaker have asked Omega Australia who have seen the photos but won’t comment without seeing the watch itself. My local guys are sitting on the fence. Omega Au say it may need to go to Switzerland. I have until the 30th to respond to PayPal.
I will ask Marcus again but if there is someone out there sure enough and credentialed enough to provide PayPal with.
  • Documentation supporting the claim that the item is damaged or significantly not as described
I would be very appreciative. You have convinced me but it seems I cannot convince PayPal.
If so can you PM me and I will give my contact details.

I can understand why an expert would want to see the watch in-person before committing to making an official statement. Their credibility is on the line, anyone can show photos of anything on the internet and there is nothing in it for them. Perhaps you can get an extension from PayPal and send it to Omega. Or perhaps you can find a local appraiser that you can pay a modest fee.

Agree with @Dan S - PayPal is on your side here, they are just doing their due diligence and want a paper trail.
I would think they would accept an appraisal from any certified jeweler or Omega dealer- it may be worth speaking with your local AD and see if they would be willing to take a look at it. Most AD’s have no knowledge of vintage pieces, but if you get one that does and is willing to put on letterhead that the watch is not made with Omega parts, other than a movement taken from another watch, that may be all PayPal needs.
Any decent jeweler has an appraiser (usually for insurance appraisals) and most are happy to help when it comes to these kinds of situations (fakes are bad for everyone). I would let them know about the situation, what your concerns about this watch are and provide them with the documentation that you already have. It’s worth whatever their appraisal fee is to get your money back.

Update on this ..

Paypal eventually closed the case stating I didnt provide the info required. I dont know what more I could do, I had sent them everything .. full appraisal from Marcus Alexander confirmed it was fake. Paypal referred me to VISA and Visa reviewed and referred me back to paypal.
NZ police referred me to Athens police and Athens police referred me back to NZ police. No luck there.
Omega Europe were interested and said they would investigate. I forwarded all correspondence to them but have not heard back in the last few weeks. I am still following this up.

The seller did reimburse me USD$1000 "for repairs" via paypal and I think this shut paypal up even though I had asked for a full refund

Oh and Chrono24 acknowledge the fake post and said they would monitor the sellers future activity. He is a dealer but listed on Chrono as a private seller so no guarantee from them anyway. Escrow would have helped me had I gone through them but they still wont take any action on his fake listing.

Sorry Barnz, this sucks. Many of us have paid a “noob” tax in some way or another, it hurts all of us in this hobby when someone is taken advantage of so flagrantly.
I hope this doesn’t sour your desire to enjoy vintage watches, there are more honest people in this hobby than not.
