Best Gotcha Moments with a Seller?

My favorite brands are Omega and Seiko. Last week went into several watch stores and pawn shops and saw several.

Saw a few vintage Seiko's which I liked. When asking any question regarding if hands are original, or basically any watch related question, the sellers would strongly say "this is 100% original".

Saw a beautiful vintage Seiko 7009 from 1988, and asked to see the movement. Seller said, "only if you buy the watch can you see the movement". I told him, "how can I buy a watch, without seeing the movement". He agreed, and opened the caseback. Then, I saw it had a 7s26 movement (which began in 1996); hence a frankenwatch confirmed. I told him "that's why I ask to see movements when buying a watch, to avoid buying a watch not 100% original".

He still did not believe me. I then proceeded to show via Google, several sites about the 7s26 cal. production years. He became completely silent after, and the people that were also in the store heard what had happened.

What are some moments you have caught a seller in person selling frankenwatches, or with non-original parts?

Having been watch hunting all over the USA and the tropics for many years, I could go on and on for days about it. Anyone with boots on the ground experience would have this happen at least weekly if not daily. However, unlike you I don't call the seller out on it. I don't offer any free educations to the sellers. I simply say "It's not for me". Better to keep the door open as the seller may make a mistake in your favor next time 😁

This summer I saw this watch on a website called “watchbox”. It was advertised as being from 1973. I sent them a message suggesting it was older than 1973. They sent me a thank you note and asked if I wanted to buy it.

They also “fixed” the listing! I deleted my “watchbox” app and have not returned to their site.

Not exactly what OP is looking for. But Gotcha!

I agree with you. Sometimes, though, can't hold my tongue. It's wise to keep the door open, as you say. Never know a vintage rarity the seller might hold and not know its worth.

Yeah maybe it was 74. My memory is good but does not last long!

IIRC, the ref 6536 was made for a few years in the 50s. The confusion in that listing comes from the fact that Rolex re-set their serial numbers in ~1955, so the same serial # could be from 1945 or from 1956. I see this error all the time from people who aren't familiar with when particular references were made, and blindly use internet charts.

The funny part was their correction. A Sub in 1945. Maybe General Patton had one made! He did have his uniforms custom made. No standard issue or even Brooks Brothers for George.
