Best entry level straight lug speedy...is it the FOIS?

I guess it depends on what "entry level" means, but as an owner of both a FOIS and a 60th Anniversary Speedy I'd say have a look at the latter. Both are fantastic though.

+1 to this. Full disclosure: I own a 60th and not a FOIS, but I am a hesalite over sapphire guy plus I love how true to the original the case is of the 60th. Does depend on your budget for "entry level" as the 60th will set you back a bit more $$$.

Also, let's be honest. Who owns just one Speedy? I'm pretty new here but I've already figured that out. You're really just choosing your first step along a long and wonderful journey.

Yes you’re right!!

I was a person who hated chronograph watches; they were thicker than normal, they had complication that was not relevant or needed with cell phones and they looked so big.

Then I saw Omega TinTin and liked the funky red colour scheme on the dial. It appeared unlike other Omega watches. It was available at a good discount on mrsp as it was sitting with the AD for more than 2 years. And I bought it! This accident happened in April 2016.

Then I started reading about Moonwatch stories and reviews. I realised without a vanilla Moonwatch I can’t really get the real pleasure of owning a legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch. So I bought one.

Yes that’s a great watch indeed. You can play and experiment with it anyway you like with straps or bracelets.

Then RJB started his #ST watches and again they’re so irresistible.....

That’s my story so far with chronograph watches that I really hated once....

I think straight lugs are great but until you own and wear one it is difficult to know if they are for you so perhaps it is best to get in as cheaply as possible. Bearing in mind the price of both I am personally not sure the 60th is double the watch the FOIS is as it is a case of dimishing returns. I think the FOIS is an excellent starting point for a beginner as the sapphire crystal and ease of service and parts replacement makes it a more practical day to say wearer than a vintage straight lug or one of the more pricey LE offerings.

Well I would think he would be trying at least a FOIS on first, but either way he said he was convinced he wanted it to have straight lugs. (For the record I prefer straight lugs). Also, like I said it depends on what your definition of entry level is. FOIS is more entry level than a 60th for sure, but I'm not sure the 60th will be much more a case of diminishing returns. Either way the FOIS is a fantastic watch as I've said since the day I got mine. I think it's nicer than a couple of other recent Speedmaster releases that are more heralded.

I actually prefer the sapphire crystal to the hesalite, but it also depends on the watch. Anyway, to your point, the case size of the 60th is a huge plus. I like the FOIS case as well of course. Anyway, the 60th at the moment might only set you back $2500 more right now. For some that's a lot of money, but all things considered (more limited production, comes with a bracelet, more popular) it might be worth it depending on his tastes.

A long and wonderful journey or a big rabbit hole. LOL. The nice thing as an owner of four Speedmasters now I can say that each one offers something different. I have a FOIS, 60th, ST1 and Tintin. With those four I get three different case sizes, essentially four different dials, three different handsets and two different bezels. Factor in three different straps and a bracelet and the collection is even more diverse. To your point though, yeah, good luck with just one. I thought my FOIS would be my one and only and a year and a half later...

Great story. It's funny how our tastes can change over time, and sometimes rather quickly...

Pictures coming soon!!! 😗

The 60th anniversary is a nice option; you can probably find one used for a resonable price
