Best entry level straight lug speedy...is it the FOIS?

Convinced myself that I don't want a "speedmaster reduced" and also convinced myself that the wife won't approve of a 105.003 era speedy. Also convince myself that I only want a straight lug speedy. In my entry level speedy world of options, would FOIS be the best bet for a decent daily wearing straight lug speedy?

Yes, probably. I'm convinced that your wife would not approve of 105.003 era Speedy, which is precisely why you should get one, and not tell her. How long have you been doing this?

We all were, once. In time, you'll be armed with a plethora or effective rationalizations, which will allow multiple watch purchases with impunity. My favorite: whatever you spend on a watch, it's still cheaper than an affair, and the subsequent divorce that follows. In time, you will have one heck of a collection...

You need to remind her that she'll be cashing these in after you've, ah, "moved on"

Buy vintage, after 1 you say its just a new strap every new watch you buy, after 5 they are just cases for spare parts.

I guess it depends on what "entry level" means, but as an owner of both a FOIS and a 60th Anniversary Speedy I'd say have a look at the latter. Both are fantastic though.

But for that dear, in order to digest, you need a THAT dumb a partner as well!

And in case you’re blessed with one, then you don’t need to explain much.

I think straight lugs are great but until you own and wear one it is difficult to know if they are for you so perhaps it is best to get in as cheaply as possible. Bearing in mind the price of both I am personally not sure the 60th is double the watch the FOIS is as it is a case of dimishing returns. I think the FOIS is an excellent starting point for a beginner as the sapphire crystal and ease of service and parts replacement makes it a more practical day to say wearer than a vintage straight lug or one of the more pricey LE offerings.

I don't know, I think FOIS is an excellent gateway drug to the world of speedy modding, which can quickly get close to the 105.003 wife-disapproved price range...!

In any case I cannot live with the FOIS due to the sapphire crystal. "Irreconcilable differences".

My quote above, Comes from a member a while back that used to pass off a New speedmaster as "only a new strap dear"

Don't need to ask the misses or a forum on what to buy. ;)

I am sitting around the corner from Weir's on Grafton St after trying on the FOIS (again). I've the money in my wallet for it, but can't decide. Should I really spend that much on a watch? I already have a fucking watch. It looked so good on me though. So good...

I’m finicky with Speedmasters and always dumped them until purchasing the 60th. The bracelet on this version is terrific. This was after a lot of trial and error. Start with the FOIS and move on from there.

Pop into McDaids, down a few scoops and the right course of action should materialise.
