Can you tell us where that was? I'm almost afraid to guess.
North eastern Mexico, where all the US corporations have set up their automotive plants. I used to have a guide to the area issued by GM, it included pictures of the local uniforms, national guard, army, police etcetera, and told you how to survive encounters with each of them! One warning suggested locking yourself in your vehicle until a different uniform type arrived,,, it was really comforting.

That's just awful. It would be one thing if you were going to talk about gangs or something, but to hear that about uniformed personnel? But here in the States it's ICE that are the bad guys.😵‍💫

I have been bused back to San Antonio as the company did not like people staying over the border... but it is too easy to offend, if you are born and bred local it never seems that bad (well almost never). What I am taking from all this is… sh-t can happen whatever, Don’t look too well heeled unless you have body guards, Understand if you are not born and bred local you are more of a target, never relax 100% and be careful what you post online and how you advertise - sharks can travel a longways…..but most of the time with Omega you will be fine ;0)
As an aside I am not a massive fan on enhanced insurance - It seems to just mean letting more random people have detailed lists of your junk and what it is worth…Maybe better to stay under the radar.

Staying under the radar doesn't help is your home burns or is flooded--insurance is good for different things. Having been flooded out once, I have a lot of evolved opinions about how useful insurance can be, especially if you take care to make sure you are appropriately covered, and have good records of ownership.

But yeah--crap can happen anywhere, no matter how careful you are.

Never can tell. I had some in a safe and then the bank flooded in a thunderstorm. All boxes below a certain level were drenched. Luckily, mine was higher, but ...

I keep mine in the house where I can see them and enjoy them. When the day comes that its too dangerous to keep them around I'll likely sell the lot keeping only those select few pieces.

a daily wearer, likely the Bulova Oceanographer
Dad's Omega Century
the Illinois 24j Bunn Special

stuff the rest...

Not quite as bad as the Mexican cult that butchered an American student so their leader could devour his superior brain to increase his mental powers. He also ate body parts from many other victims for their various talents.
Watches aren't the only thing you should keep safe down there.

I did not want to put a downer on things but while enjoying our hobby it is good to keep safe and a weather eye open (accepting that sometimes sh-t happens whatever). The reported story below shows sometimes trouble will find you if you advertise for it...…..

''Thieves used a 'rammit' device - the type used by police - to force the door, ran into the house demanding money and shouting: 'Where's the Rolex?'…the persons partner had previously advertised a Rolex watch for sale on the internet''
This situation makes a case for owning a reasonable fake Rolex. Just leave it lying around if they break in while you are not there it will go. If heaven forbid its a home " invasion" you don't have to go to the safe just surrender it.

Usually if I know that I am going somewhere that I would feel uncomfortable wearing it, it will stay at home. If my life is threatened there is nothing worth that much to fight over. Hand it over. Always good to have it insured. Another thing I’ll do is tuck it up under my sweater sleeve to try and hide it or keep Lynch hand in pocket if I’m feeling uneasy

Easy ,watch display box with a couple more replicas on prominent display. I doubt if they would.even open the box.
One step further 2 safes one easily found with a couple less desireable piece inside.
Second safe not easily seen is the mother load.
This can be taken further if you feel its needed. Primarily don't advertise your collection.

Get a grip, people. Most of us are not going to get mugged for our watch and wallet. Keep your wits about you and don't visit a strip club at 1am on a Saturday night and drink too much beer. I've travelled the world for 40 years, often with many watches, and have yet to run into problems, but I don't put myself at risk flashing an expensive watch in sketchy parts of the city or after dark. BE SMART, it's not that difficult. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation take your watch off and slip it in your front pocket.

I live in a benign area for environmental risks. There are storage solutions to mitigate flood and to a degree fire. Fire is a worry for me as there are so many ignition sources these days / everything is rechargeable. I had a scare once and now have a smoke alarms in every room plus I don't leave too much plugged in or run major appliances when not in the house (apart from the fridge). For sure I fully insure the building.
