Great review, thanks. Makes me want to buy half a watch (the front, natch), at least. Don't Omega run these design ideas through a focus group or even in-house testing panel (employees with a bit of time on their hands) for these editions? Or is it unnecessary for an LE that'll sell through no matter what?

That caseback reminds me of Marvel's Venom, and looks about as friendly to a wrist.

You mean... make a prototype!

I had some correspondence back and forth with Omega regarding purchasing the Tokyo Panda after cancelling my ST2 reservation. I loved the Apollo XI LE that this watch was based on, and this seemed like a relatively economical way to get a Panda Speedy. Omega was very helpful and got me on a list with an OB in the US. There was a somewhat convoluted purchase/payment process outlined to me, and I was told I would be contacted by the OB, which I assumed would be relatively quickly. In reality, more than a year passed, and I purchased a white dial Speedmaster Racing edition, as I hadn't heard anything from Omega or the OB. 6 months later I got a phone call out of the blue from the OB, but I had moved on at that point. I would have jumped at the chance to buy the Tokyo Panda if it hadn't taken so long - it's a beautiful watch.

When I saw this, I had the "great idea" to get a different case back, just for the normal wear and saving the special Tokyo 2020 one. My Omega Service man was not sure if it would work but was willing to order a different back. So here I am with a Speedmaster Moonwatch case back "ref 112stz005923" and surprisingly it does not fit ;-(

Fair enough. I will wear my beautiful blue speedmaster like it is!
An this case back will go.

it seems incorrect that there is not a correct caseback replacement for the Tokyo - calling @Archer who has reported multiple people doing just this

then there’s folks like @Syrte , who I believe with a FOIS had a watchmaker take a polishing wheel to the most offending edges?

I was planning to do this. Sad that this doesn't work. It is also surprising that it wont fit assuming it is the same case/movement and design .

Just to clarify, I didn't say people had done it - only that people had asked.

I love this watch, and would love to put one next to my Mitsukoshi, but the red tipped chrono hand…I can’t get over it.

Necro thread surfing tonight. I guess one could always put this watch on a bund band to save your wrist. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I have had my Tokyo 2020 white dial black subdials for over a year now. It’s one of my most comfortable watches, and probably my daily-beater. The watch is stunning, strong, does not scratch easily, and so easy to read. It has a certain traditional old-world look to it, and the chronograph is a joy to operate. I love the red tip of the chrono hand, with the red writing on the dial, it just pops a bit of colour on an otherwise silver/black dial. I simply love it….

The case back has never been a problem to me, and i would not consider replacing or substituting it, as I don’t like modding my watch, nor is it uncomfortable in any way, at least to me.

Side by side pict with a Rolex 116500 for comparison.

Sorry I'm late to the party here, but thanks @Longbow for a tremendous review. Would you possibly pass along the product number for that clasp you added? I'm guessing the one pictured showing its number was the original.
Thanks again!

I have had two of these Tokyos for over three years, both on deployant clasps, but have not had any issues with the back being sharp, uncomfortable or imprinting anything on my wrist. The picture in the initial post is weird-o-rama.
