The exract tells you what reference your movement and serial number were originally put in.

So for a Speedmaster 321 it confirms whether your movement originally came in a Speedmaster or something else such as a Seamaster chrono. This is useful for checking against possible franken watches. Other sites with serial number charts, even extremely accurate ones such as ilovemyspeedmaster don't confirm what reference it actually came with, just what reference it probably came with based on the likely production date.

The extract in the old format and the red envelope at least was well presented. The current version is not worth it.

Yes, there are more items on the extract and it is official. But it seems that unless you have an unusual dial, we can get the model number and production date from websites like https://www.ilovemyspeedmaster.com/productiondateprediction/ Together with the moonwatch only and forums, we know what a model such as 145.012 should look like or have. So without an extract i can put in my serial number in this lookup, find the model number and approximate production date. Unless your watch is an ultraman the extract is only going to say black dial, which you also already know. What you don't know is the place of origin, which the extract provides. Since the extract doesn't provide authenticity and the other information is now publicly available, is it worth buying for the place of origin? Some people seem to value it when they buy a watch because a watch with an extract is mentioned in the attributes. So it would seem to be valuable to some buyers. But if it doesn't authenticate then it seems like just a curiosity and a watch without an extract should be the same value as one with an extract. Nice to have but worth 120 chf?
No one needs to convince you of the value of an extract, and that you should pay for one. If it's your watch and you are keeping it for the rest of your life, an extract can be fairly meaningless. But if you are looking to sell a Speedmaster for >$5k, potential buyers will want to see one.

I get the appeal of the extract, even for my lifetime watch. It's a connection to the factory. But in the instance of the beautiful watch in this thread, not having an extract should not impact a buyer. It seems to me at least, that extracts have grown to have an oversized significance.

But you are definitely right. These are personal choices and it sure won't hurt. I still might get one some day. Cheers.

..Another note on extracts.. Surely an extract stating “delivered to Ministry of Defence”, or “delivered to USAF” or “Delivered to NAAFI“ is much more appealing than a simple “delivered to the Netherlands”.. For me it is anyway..

I can assure you that for a lot of buyers an extract will be very important and might be the item that swings the deal when deciding on which watch to spend €7-15K on. In that regard a CHF120 is money well spent and for a dealer it makes perfect sense to invest that sum on a watch.

Back from te spa !
My watchmaker did a wonderful job. The original plexiglass has been polished and the movement fully serviced.

Awesome watch, I never thought much about the speedy, but yesterday strapped on a customers watch at the shop together with a submariner, and the quality of the bracelet against the Rolex was no contest, I never gave much thought on how much a smooth fitting bracelet changes the feel of a watch and the speedy felt amazing. I’m sure the sub would also with a better bracelet
