It is 36€ to return, but I guess I have no other option. Really want to get my hands on a vintage piece. Any suggestions for a newbie?
I would also spend some time perusing the Private Watch Sales section of this forum.

I can. But I have to pay return shipping.

You have the option of (i) keeping a watch which you know is not a "real" Omega and which might frustrate you every time you will see it on your wrist or (ii) swallowing $15-25 shipping cost, getting your money back and buying a "real" vintage Omega watch.

Let us know which option you opted for.

Please ignore all the advice you have gotten about returning the item. Wait out the fourteen day return period. Claim the item does not work. Boom eBay claim in your favor. Have to fight dishonesty with dishonesty ,eBay being the biggest crooks of all.

::facepalm1:: Amazing.

@Rometx - as a quick piece of advice: if you insist on going for an eBay Omega, stay away from the ones with black dials... The vast majority of them has been redialed and are as such of little to no interest for collectors.

@Rometx

Firstly, congrats on getting into this fascinating hobby👍

Second, enough folks with vastly more experience have spoken already, so I will simply summarize the advice and write a simple plan to follow.

1) If you can return it, return it right away. If you have to eat the shipping costs, consider that to be a relatively inexpensive price of learning a valuable lesson, which is 2)
2) Condition, condition, condition. It is far better to overpay for an excellent original vintage piece than to underpay for one in below average or average condition.
3) Knowledge and patience are your friends. Don't be in a hurry to own an Omega.
4) The classifieds here are probably the safest channel to buy affordable, vintage Omega's. As you can tell, this is an active group of members and all ads are pretty much validated or corrected if needed. Stay away from Ebay.
5) Since you're new to vintage watches, start slow and with a small budget. When you find something you like, don't hesitate to ask questions of the seller.
6) Buy something that is authentic, original and in good running condition.
7) Enjoy!

You are getting off very lightly indeed! My "tuition fees" were a lot more than that and so were those of a lot of other forum members, so consider yourself lucky.

Here's a pretty decent example of the Ref. 165.003:

Pretty big difference, huh?

Has a genuine Omega crown but not the correct one for this model.

Absolutely serious. I just had an individual return a watch I sold after keeping it for 30 days. Claimed the watch was running slow. Individual had taken it upon themselves to also have the bracelet welded and refinished. When brought to ebays attention that the item was not returned in the condition it was shipped the response from eBay was that I couldn’t “prove” the other individual had refinished the bracelet and I lost. The post office must have gremlins that refinish bracelets in transit. Because I had no money in PayPal eBay in their way not only dropped me to a negative balance in PayPal but also tried to get my credit card for the amount. When confronted on the phone they tried to assure me that they don’t do such things. 45 minutes on the phone and they finally saw the error of their dishonesty.

I would like to take a moment to expres my feelings about this community. This is an amazing community!

Hmm. The bezel looks present in your first photo but it looks absent in your last. Weird.

Perhaps it has the wrong bezel or wrong crystal. Very hard to tell in the photos and it may even be that the crystal tension ring is on upside down. In fact, I'm thinking that is the case as it gives odd reflections.

In the end, did you decide to return it or keep it? I would say that it's going to be very difficult to get a decent condition sixties automatic Omega for €280. Have a look at the manual wind models instead which are a bit cheaper.

Good luck, Chris

Yup. I have nothing to really contribute, but I do log on a few times per day to read, read, read. The one thing I have learned here is that I don’t know ANYTHING, but someone here always has the answer. Threads like these are my favorites, as they keep me in check and remind me to stay far away from eBay when looking for anything of real value.

There are plenty of watches on eBay that have real value. Unfortunately, there are far more that are overpriced, over-restored and fake. That is true of almost any free marketplace, including traditional auction houses.

You just have to know what to look for and what to stay away from.

I am tracking a rather rare version of a otherwise common watch that has been misidentified. I know what it is, and I suspect a few others do as well. I'll post it on the forum if the price gets over what I believe to be its fair value.

I have not yet decided what I will do with the watch. As I am planning on becoming a serious collector, I want to get rid of it - haven't figured out the best way to do it though. One of my friends has taken an interest in the watch, and she is considering buying it for the original price + shipping which is highly unlikely, because I have told her everything I know about it and you guys helped me find out.

As for the poor Seamster itself, there is a suspicious rattling inside the case, and I have yet to take it to an experienced watchmaker. As can be seen on the pictures there is too much paint applied near the bottom left of the dial.

Some of you suggested there is something wrong with the crystal, so I tried to photograph the reflections.

My great great uncle's Luch for comparison

This is transforming more into a case study.

@Rometx this is NOT a good purchase at all buddy. You could have sent me a link or some pictures and I would have given you some insight about it.
I don't want to tell you what to do with your money, but I would return it honestly. Maybe if this was a 50$ purchase it was OK I guess, otherwise...

PS: People, please, stop buying watches from India and South America unless it's some rare genuine watch that, by some miracle, ended up over there...

36 pounds is pretty light for the newbie tax. You got off easy.

And if an ebay seller has an Omega for $69, there's a reason, and it's not because they don't know what watches are worth.

Honestly, I'd avoid ebay altogether. Try the forsale section here, there's less chance of an amazing bargain but there's also less chance of an amazing ripoff.
