·Hello,
This Constellation is being offered by a very nice seller who, like me, is an enthusiastic beginner but is very open to feedback. I’m going to say to him that I’m pretty sure it’s a redial, but I wanted to be accurate and fair in what I told the seller. This is my thinking – I’d be very open to your amendments:
1 The most obvious thing would seem to be the vertical cross hairs and the fact they do not intersect the writing. Aesthetically, I actually prefer the way it is on this watch, but this is about (correct dial) facts and not my feelings!
2 I tried a MOY test with a piece of paper held up to the screen and the MOY actually line up quite well, but the first ‘l’ in Constellation is a little bit further away from the line than you might expect.
3 One thing I’ve learned to look at is the ‘M’s, and it seems that an upside-down ‘W’ style is authentic for the ‘automatic’. The ‘M’ in ‘chronometer’ is different, but does that make it wrong. I’m sure I’ve seen authentic pieces which have that, but I might be wrong.
4 Is not the star and the 6 marker a little bit wonky, or is that just my imagination?
The watch is being described as a 504 from 1958, but I haven’t seen the movement.
No doubt I’m missing a lot of basic things, but I’m learning, and I’m treating this to some extent as one to learn from. Thanks as ever for your advice.
