There is a really nice Hamilton manual wind military issued watch at a local pawn shop.

Could prob snag for you for $75 or so.

34mm and nylon strap. Killer patina to boot.
That would be awesome. No pics? a reference pics perhaps?

Overpriced? What is your watch budget, if you don't mind me asking?
135 for a .45 cent cheap quartz chrono movement with off the self case and cheap hardware? Not worth over 80 on a good day.

There are much better choices at the 100- 135 price point. Fossil, Nixon, Seiko 5. Citizen. Casio g shocks

Since I visited their website I get 6 months of them spamming all sources of internet advertising I see.

I would avoid a day/date complication. It could be a real hassle to reset. Maybe keep in mind power reserve too...

A swatch system51 may be a bit on the big side (but think, in 4 years they hit teens), but one cool thing about it is not only is it automatic, but you can also see inside (and some of them have really funky designs)...most kids (boys at least) should totally dig that...

Here is one. Cool ass watch...
Wow this one is really awesome!

On maybe a vostok amphibia (maybe too big) since he loved the black bay so he may love a rotating bezel

The Seiko 5 would be a good choice for his first automatic, but for the time being I'd go with a boy's size quartz watch. Less hassle and less knowledge required to correctly operate.

I love introducing young family members to the world of proper watches and sway them away from the blingy MVMT & fake nonsense that I see kids wear. I bought the exact same Seiko 5 for my nephew recently - he's just turned 17 though. He couldn't believe it when he opened it on his birthday, he was just so unbelievably chuffed. I think we might have a future OF member right there.
A great watch for 12 years plus I think, i'm not so sure for an 8yr old but only due to the size.

All the best
