We're digging further on the ROLEX Pepsi GMT-master strapped to Cernan's spacesuit during Apollo 17 lunar EVA training.
Photo was taken June 8, 1972 and I have been contacting some people visible in the background of that photo...
So far no joy but as we clearly see lots of smiling faces, it might have been some kind of practical joke ?
Stay tuned...

Does anyone know the significance of the Carrot Cake that Wally is holding? 😀

I like that answer.

But, actually, Wally played a practical joke on Gordon Cooper. Cece Bibby used to make carrot cake. I can tell you from expterience hat it was good carrot cake. The Original Seven shared a house across the street (A1A) from Cece and would wind up there all the time. Wally must have known that Gordo didn't like carrots. Wally, being a practical joker, told Gordo that Cece made a great cake and he would love it. Gordo went over to Cece's and asked for a piece of cake. He loved it and asked what it was. Cece (not knowing what Wally was doing) innocently told Gordo that it was carrot cake. Gordo asked if it was made out of carrots. After Cece told him it was, he was on the run back to the guys' house. On his way out, he was saying that he needed to come up with some joke to play on Wally.

Indeed, the photo was taken post-Apollo 7 as Wally visited Launch Operations Manager Paul Donnelly at Kennedy Space Center and it was in fact a piece of an Apollo landing carrot cake, refering to female artist Cecelia "Cece" Bibby, who in 1962 was recruited by astronaut John Glenn to design and hand-paint the Friendship 7 insignia on the outside of his Mercury spacecraft... More soon!

Cece was a personal friend. I was her legal guardian after her stroke at San Antonio in 2006. I got her home to Georgia. Wally was a huge help in assisting me to get her to the airport at SA. I have heard all the stories and wrote an article about some of them on Space.com and Collectspace.
I will stay tuned. Glenn brought a Heuer stopwatch on his flight. Here is a different version that I got from Bob Springer that he used on STS-29.

Sure, the Apollo guys loved their Rolex, but they flew Omega. With one exception. 😀

Currently every American, European, Russian, and Japanese astronaut that goes to the ISS is issued an Omega Speedmaster Professional and is required to wear it for all EVA's.

American astronauts have not worn Speedmasters during EVA's for many years and they are not required.

There are two really good threads regarding the current use of the Speedmaster and other watches during EVA's here and here.

I accept your point but I did read several articles that stated the Speedmaster professional is currently worn for EVA's. I'll try to find it and post a link. Also Hodinkee did an article about the watch still being worn and they point out that the newer space suits have the watch sewn Ito the gauntlet with a matching white flap covering it. see pic attached.

I have never seen that logo on the dial. I’ll be doing some digging to find more info on it. If I find it. I’ll be back to post. Thank you for sharing.

This is no longer true. It has been confirmed by American astronauts that they no longer wear the watch during EVA. There was a period when it was under a flap.

Most Americans still do on launch and recovery with the escape suits. Russian Cosmonauts still wear 861/1861’s outside the suit as confirmed by video of the last EVA on the ISS and on launch and recovery.

We have now 100% proof that this was not some kind of practical joke... as new footage shows astronaut Cernan working on the LRV - Lunar Roving Vehicle wearing this amazing Rolex GMT Pepsi wristwatch during Apollo 17 training 👍

Couple of notes: Some cool vintage sunglasses (American Optics). Also he is left handed wearing his watch on the right arm (he read the handbook).
I only hope my GMT has that great patina over the years.

FYI they still sell the American Optics. I had a vintage pair my father gave me but never saw them anywhere in modern day. Then I saw that Craft & Tailored were selling them (decent price) and if I'm not mistaken, you can order directly from the American Optics site as well. I had to get me a pair after I saw First Man.
