With the resurrection of the EVA thread and the continued questions about the use of the Speedmaster by US astronauts I'll throw out this challenge to anyone up for the task.

    Who wants to play.....

"Find a picture of a Speedmaster being worn by a US Astronaut (wearing a US EVA suit) during a US EVA after February 3, 1974"
The Omega Photoshopped one does not count;)

I believe that this image of Ed Gibson taken during his Skylab EVA on February 3, 1974, is the last time a Speedmaster was worn by a US astronaut during an EVA. If anyone can find a picture proving otherwise I would sincerely love to see if.

    367415-b613ae2148eab438f5721c62bc34053d.jpg

To the winner of the challenge I'll offer this prize to the first person that can provide a verifiable image. A vintage new Apollo era Garland P-35 mechanical pencil as used by the Apollo crews or a new complete set of unused 1969 watch band calendars. Your choice of one.

    IMG_2803.JPG

To win is simple....Provide one image with all the requirements below.

The images must show an identifiable Speedmaster on the exterior of the US EVA suit on a US EVA after February 3, 1974, preformed by a US astronaut.

    Anyone up for the challenge?

Let’s keep it to the traditional approved for EVA's mechanical Speedmaster. I would however love to see a picture of an X-33 worn externally during and EVA by a US astronaut if you are sitting on one.

I believe that you are correct. If someone manages to dig one up I would be very surprised as I feel like a photo like that would be more commonly known, if it existed.

I don't want to clutter up the thread too much, but at least the Russians still wear them! :)

^ That was taken during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, so before the picture in the OP.

The answer might be with the early US spacewalks such as Kathy Sullivan's EVA on STS-41G (October 1984)
    Otherwise...
American astronauts have been wearing the Russian Orlan "Sea Eagle" space suit
Part of my "" 40 years Orlan spacesuit "" article coming up in January 2018
    :D
On 29th April 1997, cosmonauts Tsibliyev and Linenger made the first egress in an Orlan-M spacesuit from the airlock compartment of the Kvant-2 module of the Mir space station. It was the first time that an Orlan spacesuit was used by an American astronaut as Jerry Linenger installed equipment from a position at the end of Mir's pole-like Strela crane during a 5 hours spacewalk. In fact, it was the first time since the 1974 Skylab era that a US-astronaut had ventured outside an Earth-orbiting space station.

edit: The fact that they digitally enhanced the 1995 STS-69 image might be a definite answer to OP's question

However the US-glove with sewn-in wrist watch was only in the 1980-1982 planning stages (Sewn-in watch in right hand glove) with a small LCD screen sewn to the left hand glove... I believe the project was abandoned as US astronauts soon wore a larger LCD computer-pad over the forearm...

While on the subject, let me share an Extra Vehicular Activity image clearly showing the open airlock at the mid-deck of a space shuttle
Most 1981-2001 NASA photos weren't that close up to identify any watches astronauts were wearing...:(

I was able to speak with the ILC (International Latex Company) historian the maker of the suits worn going back to the Apollo days about the glove with the sewn in watch and he does not believe, or have any records, that it ever went into production and that the one shown in the image we are familiar with was a prototype and possibly used for some limited training activities.

    Bingo!!

Well contacted the MoonwatchUniverse history-photo blog and there're several photos showing the Omega Speedmaster chronograph in use during a Space Shuttle EVA ~ spacewalk
    ::book::
In November 1982, on STS-05 two astronauts wore the early EMU - Extravehicular Mobility Unit in the airlock for a pressure check, without leaving the orbiter Columbia...
Detail of that photo clearly shows the early version glove depicted in the black & white NASA photo in my post here above... as the "sewn-in watch" in the right hand glove can be seen... Well "sewn-in-watch" it's more a multi-layer flap covering the Speedmaster chronograph !
Although the watch is not visible, it clearly looks like a wrist watch sitting underneath that flap
These early SSA - Space Suit Assembly versions were produced by ILC - International Latex Corporation Delaware - USA

On to the next STS - Space Transportation System mission, STS-06 which was the first Space Shuttle mission with an EVA ~ spacewalk performed by astronauts/mission specialists Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson... on April 7, 1983 lasting 4 hours 17 minutes...
In these details of the spacewalk photos, we can easily distinguish the "sewn-in-watch" flap with an Omega Speedmaster chronograph sitting underneath as the distinctive pushers & crown are visible... Astronaut depicted = Story Musgrave
On the EMU chest, the STS-06 mission logo can also be seen... It would be interesting to know which exact Omega Speedmaster chronographs were used for this first Space Shuttle spacewalk

Moreover, in October 1984, on STS-41G the first American woman, Kathryn D. Sullivan, conducted a space walk wearing the early version of the ILC produced Space Suit Assembly with "sewn-in-watch" flap... so mystery solved ;)
To end answering the question of this topic, here's another detail of the STS-06 April 7, 1983 spacewalk, clearly showing the distinctive crown & pushers of an Omega Speedmaster chronograph sitting underneath the protective flap, astronaut depicted is Story Musgrave

Really great finds @SpeedyPhill. PM me your address and let me know if you want the calendars or the pencil.

@Skalli-wag welcome to the forum. I hope you have enjoyed your stay here so far. Since you felt the need to deride my two posts this morning my advice to you would be to ignore content you don't care for. There is plenty of non Speedmaster content that you might find to your liking.

    EDIT - Pencil

Could we extend the same wish for people that keep commenting negatively on that Grail-Speedmaster-guy's post with insults and idiocy?

    Well done @SpeedyPhill!

You do know that you don't have to open threads with "Speedmaster" in the title, right? Quit trolling.
