It's always great when you find one more small piece of the puzzle.

I have wondered about the origin of Lovell's Naval Academy crested Rolex GMT since I first received a picture of his watch from his signing of my Speedmaster case back. In the recent fantastic interview with Wally Schirra by Chuck Maddox shared by Fratellowatches last week in their Speedy Tuesday article, I think it answers the question about where Lovell's watch may have come from.

Here is a passage from the article where Schirra discusses his Rolex.

Looking closer at an image of Schirra, I believe he originally had the same Rolex GMT that Lovell still wears which leads me to believe Lovell received one as well as an alumni.

Lovell's GMT with the crest clearly visible.

Schirra family photo with him wearing his Rolex GMT.

As close a look as I can get, but I believe it shows something (USNA Crest?) in the same area on the dial as it appears on Lovell's.

Now off to contact the USNA alumni association and the USNA museum curator to see if they have anymore information about this watch.

Thank you @Robert-Jan

Checking the use of the Gold Omega Apollo tribute Speedmaster chronographs given to 35 astronauts, I have noticed that Charles "Pete" Conrad was wearing a Gold Rolex Day Date wrist watch in his last official NASA portrait (S71-51259) for the Skylab 2 mission

Having talked to some astronauts, MoonwatchUniverse is working on a major update on the subject of this topic....
Here's what we think US naval aviator & flight surgeon Manley "Sonny" Carter wearing a Rolex in his 1984 official NASA portrait.
30 years ago, Dr Carter wore the watch aboard space shuttle Discovery during STS-33. He sadly died in an airliner crash in April 1991 R.I.P.

Our thanks goes to @TLIGuy who's remark about US Navy Alumni Association (two posts hereabove) triggered me to go through no less than 1000 (individual & crew) NASA photos with the emphasis on those with a naval officer and/or naval aviator background... finding another half a dozen Rolex watches as personal choices of NASA astronauts...

Rolex watches are very popular with the military. Since most astronauts had a military background it isn’t uncommon to see pictures of them with a Rolex on one wrist and the Omega on the other.

Just like this. GMT on one wrist Speedmaster on the other.

Or even better... Astronaut sporting both his personal preference wrist watches ( ROLEX ) as the "company wrist watch" , Omega Speedmaster, had to go onto the forearm anyways 😁

1973 Skylab 2 training press conference in the Skylab Orbital Workshop where astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad explained the dynamic measurements taken at the bicycle ergometer and the human vestibular experiment.
Note Conrad was wearing his personal Gold Rolex Day-Date wrist watch:

Nice picture @SpeedyPhill What are you pointing out as completely different? Is this from your larger slide presentation? Is there something “completely different” with the GMT Schirra is wearing compared to the one above in the post? Same watch or are you thinking something different?

I have always found this picture of Cernan wearing a Rolex GMT interesting simply because I could never identify what was going on under the head of the watch on the strap. Today I ran across a new image that solves the mystery.

Here is the new color image taken from another angle. It appears that the GMT Cernan is wearing has the bracelet on it and is simply folded flat and is taped to the top of the Velcro strap. From this angle you can see the bracelet link sticking out from under what appears to be yellow masking tape.

I'm not sure about you all but I know I will sleep better tonight knowing this mystery is solved.::facepalm1::
