Also this isnt how my father in law left it. When I presume he pulled it apart and left the plexi off, it was fine and over a very long period of time it dial was damaged, but I bet it wasnt too bad when it was initially exposed to air. He would never have seen it like this.

I hear you BUT refinished dials on rolex's (even on the original plate) are often the kiss of death value wise; some members of this forum can skillfully stabilize old luminous hands with a coat of clear shellac, maybe that same technique can be applied to your dial to prevent it from any further oxidation/deterioration. I'd reach out to them- once stabilized you can either use it or store it in special dial container and use a replacement for daily/casual wear.

Hi I am still all very new to this and I was directed to have the dial looked at in HK. I mean if there is another way by all means send me the details of these other people and I will reach out to them. Id love to see some before/after pics too.

If you store dials in those membrane containers be prepared to risk a damaged dial.

Edit - Dials should only be stored in Dial Storage Containers.

There was a thread here not to long ago on stabilizing failing luminous hands, you will have to search for it. This person is well known and well considered https://www.instagram.com/thealchemistrelumer/ Also try asking your own refinish sources if they can stabilize the dial instead of touching it up or refinishing it; you could post an ad in the WTB section and the members may respond. Finally, Reach out to Watchmakers International...Bob Ridley..(817) 276-1400 he may be able to help you as well.

Will do! The dial is about four weeks from being restored without the removal of the existing paint. I am very much looking forward to seeing the final product. Hopefully this miserable year will at least have one shining moment for me, the restoration of my step fathers rolex.

Look forward to seeing this when finished, though I have two say that were it done, I'd be wanting to have the dial made more usable though being relumed by someone like James Hyman- whose work seems to be irreproachable. But it's not mine, and I'm impressed by your dedication to the restoration.

What happened to the OP?
He got booted, if I recall correctly it was due to aggressive language in a thread about extended warranty cards.

Thread is still active on TRF, @Dan S. Step Fathers 5513 is the thread title.

Thanks, yeah I was following the thread there and it made me remember this thread. That's why I asked.

He got kicked out of the group. You can see what happened in this thread.

I must have missed that thread. Interesting read. 🙄 The name-calling didn't surprise me too much, since I had seem something similar elsewhere, but the second identify was an unexpected twist.
