A small step for most here, but a big leap for me.
I wanted a Speedmaster ever since the late 90ies, but somehow lost sight. When I got into the hobby more seriously around 2010, I felt that I needed to advance to it in my journey. First financially, as there were always so many other watches to be had for the money, so you almost need to fill that desire first to a certain extent. Second, in choosing between all of them and then crossing that minefield successfully. To this extent, I took a shortcut in my first endeavor.
Before coming to the realization that an Ed White or 2998 would be the optimal watch for my taste and wrist, that train has left the station realistically for me. It had to have an applied logo and at least a dome dial, better yet stepped, of course. The normal SMP seemed just too flat without the added charm of aged tritium.
Then the FOIS came out and I never considered it, since I didn't really consider buying watches that are less than 40 years old, even less so if you can buy them new in a retail shop. And generally, I don't like things (and people for that matter) that pretend to be something they are not.
However, I was beginning to feel that the FOIS, after being discontinued, has gained recognition on its own and is becoming somewhat of a modern classic. It is an imperfect copy and for that, it has its own character. And most importantly, not to lie, it is the one I can afford and enjoy without to many worries and the recent developments in prices triggered some serious fomo...
