BROTHERS! don't let this happen to you!

hanging about down at the shops this morning and allowed the nice man behind the counter to show me a watch.

Hmmmm...silver case, I'm a sucker for silver.... on a nice matching chain, likely original, Swiss hallmarks, ebauche cylinder escapement! Likely from the 1880s? Hand painted and decorated face, yeah, its a lady's piece but @Syrte isn't here to grab it up so I might consider saving it from the melting pot.

What, it runs and sets properly? $125?

Dammit, I've been taken advantage of again!

for those who may be interested, a cylinder escapement has a large diameter balance staff machined from ruby. This has a large window in its side and is hollowed out. The escapement wheel has "feet" on it which are trapped and released in turn by said hollow as the balance wheel rotates back and forth, regulating the running of the works. The silly things have no pallets or lever and run at only about 3 beats per second, so the movement looks like its missing pieces and seems to run in slow motion. they are not noted for their accuracy. This one has all of three turns to its flat hairspring.

    What a beautiful piece! Congrats!

And let me tell you how interesting, today I was at my watchmakers, and a 30 year old guy comes in with a pocket watch which had belonged to his mother's great grand father.
His mother had just given it to him and he wanted it repaired so he could use it. 5 minutes later a young gal who must have been at most 25 years old with her biking helmet and riding gloves comes in-- and she also wants him to check a pocket watch on a silver chain she uses because she doesn't like to wear a wrist watch.
So not all is over for mechanical watches... there are some young people who think they're cool.
    Sorry for thread hijack!

My first Audemars Piguet on its way to me. I've wanted a Royal Oak forever. This 15450ST is from '15 and has original warranty left on it. I can't wait for it to arrive on Wednesday.

Inspired by James Vincent in the Time4aPint podcast, Episode #2 (thanks, @tyrantlizardrex), I had to buy the very cool skeleton Swatch:

It might eventually end up as a gift for a nephew, but I'm enjoying all the visuals myself today, since it just arrived via free 2-day shipping...

Like James said, this watch can be inspiring (and enabling) for the budding watch nerd.

When you can see everything going on within the watch like that, who wouldn't be inspired by the beauty of a mechanical watch?
