Please take a look at the article dated June 12, 2017 on hoodinkee in the column In-Depth about the Bulova Accutron Astronaut. To my best estimate it is a comprehensive story including a letter from a pilot of the USAF to Bulova and a photo of his issued watch. So I do not agrre with your statement regarding dial and hands. I made two screenshots below
That's about CIA pilots (Pilots left the USAF to become CIA employees°... X-15 pilots wore the earlier M1 & M2 (1961 & 1962) versions, just with the word Accutron on the dial... The word Astronaut was added mid-1962 to honor the Mercury 7 astronauts & X-15 test pilots... the watches were made until 1977 (N7)
So by that logic the model with 'Astronaut' on the dial isn't 'correct' either, it should be the version with just plain Accutron? Pity, it seems like all our watches aren't up to scratch then (and presumably those worn by Shepard and Cooper which also have 2 lines).
@padders As far as I know... X-15 pilots = version with just plain Accutron on the dial and the white hands http://www.mybulova.com/watches/1962-accutron-astronaut-8039 Mercury astronauts = version with Accutron Astronaut on the dial (close up of Cooper's Accutron Astronaut worn on Faith-7 May 1963 ... and Grissom's Accutron Astronaut worn on Gemini III March 1965) .
Now now, if history had combined Bulova's quality with Elgin's creativity... that would be perfect. Yet, each is prefect in its own ways...
I'm a fan of Bulova but my hands on experience with the brand is limited to modern quartz watches. I'm always on the lookout for a nice diamond dial (Beau Brummel model or similar) or a black dial 30 Jewel.
I really like the look of these tv spaceviews. Can I ask where you sourced this piece for future reference please? Cheers
I had a spell with hummers but ultimately felt that the small case size suited my wife rather better than they did me. My loss I know.
Hi, I bought it last year here in Rome from a collector. I also like these tv spaceviews and this reference in particular is quite uncommon, even if it happens to see one of these sometimes on ebay. Cheers
My latest Bulova. Case is dated coded for 1957. Movement is 1956. As I posted elsewhere, I bought this because it was birthyear watch, and came with an Omega 1036 BOR band with Omega end pieces. After a quick clean up, here is the watch head: I opened the case and found a very nice movement: Bulova 10BP, 21j, 5 adjustments, and made in the USA. I've ordered a nice strap for it and will wear test it next week. But laying on the desk top it's keeping reasonable time.
That's how people call it yes It was pretty hard to find in this version and condition but might be for sale soon with it's box to fund some other projects
