Vegas + expensive watches = bankruptcy. But it’s an enjoyable trip. 😲

I still don’t know what I wanna be when I grow up.

Same for me but I am only 60 so plenty of time to crack that nut.

Ha ha Ya your good they say 60 is the new 58 so it’s all good. The field in in now I swore of years ago. Did it for a long time really wanted a change. Found an interesting position working on equipment at a major US company one day one of my coworkers made an error cost me the use of my left hand for a couple years. So I had to crawl back to the field I swore I’d never work in again but it’s all good things could have been much worse. Perhaps watch investing is a safer field who knows.
Weird things happen in life I always liked that Cormac McCarthy quote, “we never know what’s going to happen next but it always does and it never asked our permission.”
There are a group of guys down the street from me who do three things, speculate on crypto, drink beer and play video games. I just hang out with them on occasion as they are funny as hec. So they gave me a yolo tip the other day, “put everything into ape coin it’s gonna pop.” I never heard of ape coin and I’m still not exactly sure what it does if anything but I’ll be an S.O.B. It went up 800% today. Or since they recommended it. And no I didn’t put everything in ape coin cause it sounded dumb to me. I put a little in to see what would happen. Those guys know what they want to be when they grow up and it’s not growing up. So watch investing sounds pretty tame to me when you got people putting all there net worth in “ape coin crypto.” Wtf. So now I need to avoid them for a while they are probably buying Daytonas and lambos or something.
This world is full of extremes drunk 30 year olds making a mint on apecoin while on the other side of the world people are dodging bullets and bombs. I can’t make sense of it all I’m gonna have to listen to some music.

So I guess your eye gotta be pretty good if you go down the “watch investment” lane.

Nah, these people just buy every special edition. 🙄

if you're going for investment you can't go wrong with a SS Rolex or vintage if you know what you're looking at. had both the Rolex always increased more even over my 321 speedy's

There was an article in entrepreneur about “watch investing” last week, actually might have been this week. It’s odd lately I’m coming across quite a number of articles almost “pumping” the subject. Perhaps it’s just I’m noticing them/paying attention more or perhaps it’s a reflection on prices rising lately but sometimes it seems like a coordinated effort. I’m not trying to get to all conspiracy like but I find it odd sometimes. Money takes the fun out of watches sometimes. But obviously it’s a very real part of collecting/liking watches so take things as they come, what else is one to do.

One can mock people who bring up the topic and send them along to WUS or RF. 👍

It isn't almost pumping, it is pumping, you look at the dollars invested by those internet based watch reselling companies and its plain to see they have a very vested interest in making sure that "influencers" are employed overtly or discretely at the behest of these companies so that they can get a return on the huge money they seem to have invested (reportedly).

Another thing is in magazines like Forbes, entrepreneur and papers like WSJ which will mention watches, Patek, Rolex and several other of the big brands advertise in them. It’s been shown news (TV) will play down or ignore bad stories about companies that advertise heavily on their networks so why not help out Patek and Rolex who will take out full or half page adds. Again this is just me thinking I haven’t read any info on it but tbh I haven’t looked into it.

That's a great question. Speedmasters are definitely a great investment, but it all depends on your individual financial situation.

Care to elaborate, please? 😀

I've invested in two Speedmasters. The returns have been phenomenal in that they both have provided me many MANY smiles each time I see and wear them!

Who knows what they would be worth if I were to trade them for money....who cares...I don't plan to!

Agreed with that. I’ve owned a total of four Speedmasters and they’ve all held their value and then some. I’m down to one Speedmaster now, a 1969 145.022 Straight Writing, and I’m unlikely to sell that one. I’d like to pick up a 321 at some point, but I’m so picky about quality that the search has been a long one.

Steel is a good investment at the moment. I have been squirrelling knife steel away due to the prices of certain steels going up lately. Some steels have doubled in 12 months.

You don't have an induction furnace at home? How quaint.

Too many years ago to admit I was apprenticed to British Steel Corp and was much impressed seeing one in action for making special steels in small quantities. I believe they are now available up to 100 tonnes, could be a business opportunity there 😗

Anyone else track your watch collection as a % if your net worth? I started doing that and, in investment terms, I think I'm insufficiently diversified. It's so dang hard to pull the trigger on rebalancing.

I love my one speedmaster I have - a 1977 model I bought it in 2016 off of Ebay for $2075 and then spent about $800 on a service. So around $3K all told. If I had instead spent that money in 2016 by buying 3 bitcoin an selling them at the peak I would have made almost $200,000. So my speedmaster, at its current value of around $5K was not a good investment comparatively, but I haven't lost money on it.
