My seller is also selling a BLUE modern CK2998 for $7300. Is modern classic CK2998 a good investment besides it's adorable?

A quick search shows that these are now trading less than that. Good investment? Not sure. A great watch? Absolutely!

It’s was a better investment for your seller at that price. I think it’s a great looking watch but do a search on watchrecon and get a significantly lower price.

It's a lovely watch, it won't tank in value but with 2998 pieces and a second version with the same number of pieces I doubt it will every be an investment.

Whenever I hear this question “are watches good investments” I always have to pause. Because my knee jerk reaction is always no for 99% of the people out there. Why?

Because there are much better investment alternatives that are more liquid and actually give cash flow with less risk (eg. scammers, lost in mail, unknown franken, etc).

However, to answer this seriously I suppose you might just have too much money and need some sort of alternative asset class to diversify against.

as everyone as said, this modern 2998 is less than $6k on the secondary market. Not only should you not buy this watch. Maybe you should consider a different seller going forward.

If you think of it as a enjoyable asset your going to wear. Then it’s a good investment.

But if you thinking solely a investment unless you lock it in a draw for 25-35 years it’s a bad investment.

At around 5,000 EUR, I believe that the watch is priced quite attractively at present. And I don't think you'll have to wait for 25 years for it to be valued much higher.

First, forget the investment schtick. It's a great watch, buy it to wear and enjoy. Price wise, your dealer is asking too much. I bought one brand new from an AD just last year for $5,500 and it came with the Omega 5 year warranty, and even at that price I don't consider it any real investment. I will wear and enjoy it, and as a storehouse of value. I won't lose my shirt on it when it comes time to sell.

I love mine, but I didn't purchase it as an investment but to wear.

Thinking in terms of investment is totally a risk proposition unless you are playing at a much higher level as a dealer- and still, high risk.
In 2002 I bought 4 expensive watches as I had a chunk of cash land in my lap.
A c1999 Tag Heuer Carrera for which I paid the equivalence of $2k
    A c1999 Breitling Navitimer for $2.2k
    A 1972 Speedmaster for $800
    A 1983 Rolex GMT 16750 for $2k

The Omega and Rolex had been flat at those values for years- dead flat...nobody would have thought they would increase the way they have in the last 5-10 years. The Tag has lost value (down around $1.6k now) and the Breitling is up maybe $500-1k after 17 years of ownership.
Back then the Breitling was the one people would have picked as the one that would appreciate most.
It’s total speculation- nobody can read the watch market and know where trends will go (which are based on taste, watches are driven by changing tastes in style, not anything like a stock portfolio).
Buy what you like and don’t worry about the value- maybe you’ll get lucky, most likely you won’t. None of the 4 watches above are likely to leave my collection- the Tag maybe- which losing $400 of value over 17 years of ownership isn’t a bad price for the pleasure of owning it.

No watch is a good investment without the benefit of hindsight.

That is a very nice looking watch. The investment thing I have no idea. I have posed the question “will this watch at least retain value” which is usually my main concern and even that who the hell knows for sure.

Agree.... buy it if you like it...shouldn't buy it for "investment" reasons.... at least from a purist perspective

Prices on these seem stable at around $5k USD. Closer to $5,500 if BNIB, and a little less than $5k if a little wear-and-tear. The ones for sale in this price range seem to sit for a while, but they are few and far between. So hopefully the limited supply means prices will hold in this range (which is where they have been sitting since a little while after they were delivered).

To echo what a number of others have said, I doubt it will ever increase massively in value (if at all), and I say that as someone who owns one of these pieces and should be hoping for the opposite.

However, it is one of my favourite modern watches. The dial is fantastic, it’s a great size, and I smile just knowing I’m lucky enough to own one. Even if I decide to let it go in 5 years time and have lost £1000 on it, that breaks down to about £16 a month to have owned it. I’d happily pay double that given how much I enjoy it.

The answer to your question is a resounding

    NO

But that has literally nothing to do with the question of whether you should buy it or not..?

Thanks Folks for comments which is really helpful to a freshman. I do like the watch but I'm wonderring if the attraction justify the premium. Multiple guys mentioned a fare price is $5K~6K, while I took a quick search on ebay looks sellers are listing at ~8K. Is there better source of inquiry?

Patience is your friend- keep an eye on watchrecon or on the classified’s here and look for private sellers with good rep and do your homework on the seller. Dealers will always charge a premium (that’s their business) and eBay is only good as a barometer if you look at what they have sold for, not what the asking (daydreaming) prices are listed for with BIN.
