The 4100 is 35mm and is powered by a not so hot JLC movement, not their best. The 14790 is 36mm with an AP modified JLC movement making it more robust. You would like to think that the 4100 would be less, but that would depend on who's asking.
so which was powered by the 2225 caliber? what's the production date range for these piece? i'm guessing the 4100 is an earlier production piece?
The 14790 was powered by the much superior cal.2225 and was a later production model. Biggest reasons for why there should be a reasonable difference in price. Hey, what am I doin' drivin' up the price of a watch that I want
it's odd though, i'd think the older models with the calibers closest to the originals would be more desirable, just like how 321s and 861s are more desirable than the 1861
Let's face it, the Cal.321 was so superior that both Patek and Vacheron use it in their most iconic chronographs. Not so with the particular JLC movement used in AP's 4100 series.
anyway thanks guys for your help, i pulled the trigger, will definitely update with pictures by the way, i've been trying to do some research on the rubber gaskets between the bezel and the case, on some pieces the gasket seems a little smaller than the bezel and it leaves kind of a gap exhibit A however on some other examples some pieces seem to have the gasket flushed in lined with the bezel exhibit B which is right and which is wrong? is there a difference? i've heard that it could be due to servicing out of the official AP service centre and that they fit wrong gaskets in instead. anyone able to verify?
I've gone to AP geeks at PuristS when I started my search of either a 1400 or the more desirable 14790. Among the several things I learned is to be causious of any AP RO that wasn't maintained by AP. The tell-tale sign is how the screws line up around the bezel and/or if they seem damaged in any way. Please have this gasket replaced by the AP Service Center in Boca Raton, Florida. Just my 2Cs.
well the screws do line up fine, i'm only suspicious of the gasket, but then again i've seen pieces that have been serviced at the proper service center with gaskets that do not flush with the bezel though. is there a particular reason why in Boca Raton Florida though? also i've also noticed, i read somewhere that the dials from the earlier pieces i believe including the 4100, not sure about the 14790, were supposed to have "Swiss" only that "Swiss Made" were the service dials
Maybe your gaskets not being flush is why I was told to se their Boca Raton Service center? I never asked about service dials, only te ones that I found with "tropical" dials and was told to stay away. Now I'll have to ask about service dials. Yes, I'll be sure to keep you informed.
Is it just me or did someone use the wrong screwdriver or whatever to remove the screw in the bezel between 3 & 4?
That I don't know, but I'll ask as soon as "my" guy gets back to me about the Swiss Made. My guess is that he referred me to Boca because I live in the US. I'm sure there are others world wide. Where do you live?
That alone would make me cautious and the bad gasket fit would make me question it's water resistance. No dips in the pool
Your AP Royal Oak, if serviced properly and the correct gasket is installed properly, would be just fine for a dip in the pool
