Anyone identify this watch at Costco

I don’t care either way Al.

You implied that it was in some way more or less legit than the other routes of purchase... not me.

I’m not really sure what we’re arguing about?

I wouldnt buy from Costco... or another grey market dealer... that’s my choice. Everyone else gets to make their own.

Well I'm not arguing. I first answered questions that you asked and provided some details about Costco warranty. I'm simply trying to understand your comments, that's all - that's why I'm asking the questions I have asked. I thought that when you said this:

“As legitimate as any other grey market dealer”... well there you go.

That it was implying that the grey market is somehow not legitimate. Now you appear to be saying that wasn't your intent, and if so then I have no idea what "well there you go" comment meant. If you want to discuss this that's fine, and if not that's fine too. I thought that's what we do here...

I think it is as legit as buying elsewhere. I personally don't have an issue with gray market.

That said, I wouldn't pay $5k for that watch. Personal opinion.

Sorry Al, I’m confused, and apologise if I’ve sooken out of turn.

I don’t think of the grey market as a route I’d like to use to purchase, but then I feel similar about the OB/AD network... I struggle to justify the prices being asked by any of the above for new watches... as of now, I buy nothing. 😉

In the UK, COSTCO, doesn’t have a great reputation for selling watches, they were caught removing serials... and the warranty was a straight exchange.

I’ve no idea what they do elsewhere. So can’t speak that.

In my mind, if a retailer or brand has been caught doing something dumb, I’d struggle to trust them again.

But that’s me.

On a personal note, that’s one of the ugliest Omegas I’ve ever seen.

Wasn't there a thread recently started on this exact topic?😲

I’ve been a Costco member for 20+ years. They are a fantastic organization, offer amazing variety, quality and shopper experience, pay a living wage and benefits to their staff. If the price was right, I’d not heasitate to buy a watch from them. I’ve been tempted more than a few times and in fact purchased a Raymond Weil quartz watch for the kid a few years back. When there was an issue, they simply replaced it. They are going to back a mechanical watch way better than a grey market dealer.

Ditto. I think they're a great company for both customers and their employees... sad to hear about the problem in UK...

I've had excellent experiences all the way around with Costco, and I, too, would buy a mechanical from them hands down if I saw something I wanted, the UK serial number issues notwithstanding.

Same here Larry - been 25 years at least for me. I can't say that I have bought a watch there, because the selection is usually not that great at my local store. But if they had something of interest I wouldn't hesitate to get one there. I'm a bit surprised to hear of this serial number thing, because honestly my impression is that this company is generally more ethical than that. Based on the fact this is the first I've heard of it, it seems isolated to the UK at a specific period in time, so who knows. Removing serial numbers was popular for a lot of grey market watches at one time - this was more to protect the dealers that were dumping them than anything shady on the part of the seller though. In other cases I've seen I was under the impression it was the dealer removing the serial number, not the grey market sellers.

Of course I would not buy a watch that had all serial numbers removed.

I don't have an issue with the grey market personally - if Omega really wanted to stop it, they would change the policies that lead to the grey market in the first place (like forcing watches on AD's, who in turn have to dump them to turn inventory to buy the next lot that's forced on them so they can stay afloat). They, and other manufacturers, rely on it to move less desirable pieces and keep their sales volumes up.

Like any AD, boutique, etc. there are good and bad grey dealers. There are constant threads on forums asking about or complaining about places like Jomashop, but also many threads praising very reputable grey dealers like George (Kringkily).

bingo! 👍

I have not purchased a watch from Cotsco or Jomashop, but my personal experience with other grey dealers has been positive

I cannot imagine Costco removing serial numbers when they’re engraved in the watch case. Removing the cards from the box, perhaps.

I never intended to buy from anywhere but an AD. I invalidated that policy when I picked up my Speedmaster from a TS on this forum. Less than half price vs. an OB. $187 to fix a damaged bezel and now its perfect. Similarly, when I got my GMT2 BLRO it was in a trade with a TS on the Rolex Forums.

So you don’t get a repair... they just swap... no matter what?

This is the same Costco that was selling watches with the serial numbers removed... right?

@tyrantlizardrex - Just for the sake of clarity, can you link to any articles etc. that document actual examples of Costco removing serial numbers from watches, as opposed to failing to supply cards etc. My Google-fu is usually pretty strong, but I cant find any.

I can’t I’m afraid - this was spring 2002, and the only reason it sticks with me, is that’s when I got my Speedmaster.

Costco were £350 less than Harrods, and my dad was always keen on saving money, and then they weren’t selling watches any more, and it was on watchdog.

I’m sure things have changed one way or another, but they remain a place I’d not buy big ticket items from personally.

You are missing out Chris, in general their warranty is pretty tight, much more so than many other high st retailers. It could be suggested that for a big ticket you could do worse than Costco or John Lewis for after sales coverage as in my experience they are that good. I can't comment either way on the serial thing since I have heard nothing about that but I personally would have no issue buying an Omega from them if it were cheaper than Iconic, Chronext etc (but would now check that the serial was there after your comment)

Each to their own Dave.

The way things stand I’m buying no new (r old) watches from anywhere. 😉

I don’t know what they do now... and honestly don’t care....

Not my money, not my choice... 😉

Yet you keep posting about them.

I keep replying to people asking me questions or questioning what I said.

Where have I "kept posting" about Costco?

Not exactly. And yet you have nothing to prove that Costco removed serial numbers.
Anyway ::facepalm1:: enjoy your Sunday

You're right, what an awful human being I am - I should be exiled because I can't find internet evidence of something that happened in 2002...

I also can't provide evidence of who I slept with in 2002... and yet I still remember.

Oh well. Enjoy your Sunday.

Your Costco remembrance has credence I for one will take you at face value without any shouty demands for proof but that other claim...
