Two years ago I purchased this, face to face, from a seller who wanted the cash to buy new at Costco😀

God...

I think the differences here are the OF members who are Costco members and understand what Costco is, and those who have yet to walk in there looking for a block of Parmesan Regianno and perhaps some smoked/wild salmon and perhaps some vintage olive oil, only to walk out with god knows what after two or three hours. (I'm only allowed to go in there under spousal supervision these days) 😵‍💫::facepalm1::

I agree it's essentially going by reputation of Costco. Which to me their refund/return policy says it all. Despite how they changed their policy to be a tiny bit less insane like 90 days for electronics, they still will do a lot of returns, it depends on manager. I've had family members return a TV a year later because of an issue and it's out of the manufacturer's warranty (looking at you Samsung TV's network issue...i spent countless hours help troubleshooting).

There was a thread on TRF about Costo and a few snowflakes were simply apoplectic about it. It's the only word that seems to capture the spirit of the thread.

Another thread on macrumors.com a long time ago was about Walmart selling iPhones and people were legitimatley offended by the thought of it.

I think tying your self image to a product is absurd but tying your self image to *where* you bought the product is well... I don't know exactly.

I think there are people who thrive on being made to feel special when they buy something like an expensive watch, and those who simply want the watch, and are not concerned about the special treatment (that they largely end up paying for). If you haven't guessed, I'm mostly in the second camp. I don't wanted to be treated like garbage, but I don't need bad fizzy wine and piped in classical music to buy a watch.

The Rolex crowd is on all whole different level in this regard I think. I have seen similar reactions with the Rolex at Costco thing, some with the whole "How dare they!" mentality or other acting like Southern belles with a "case of the vapors" - imagine that being said in the best Southern belle voice please...

Omega has a little of that, like the recent thread about the modified Speedmasters - being considered the same as fakes and removing the link is so over the top to me...it's just watch folks and if you like it don't buy one, but no one is destroying priceless artifacts here by putting flowers on the dial and bezel FFS! It's still an Omega, just with some added paint and engraving.

The reactions to Rolex being modified is even worse - "Oh my god, they did that to a ROLEX! Call the police!" Bamford used to do a lot of these but now they do the custom mods for some name brands, for those brands. What was once unthinkable to some is now common place. I expect to see brands offer this sort of customization more and more as time goes by. Some have always done it on their high end pieces (Patek, VC, etc.) but it's trickling down now as brands look for more sales and higher margins.

You see similar things with regards to the selection of paid athletes, actors, musicians that wear the watches. Seems to be a lot of angst over something so trivial. I was a little disappointed that Lady Gaga didn't get to be an official Rolex person - the display of exploding heads would have been quite spectacular. 😁

Another benefit is that you can enjoy a selection of Costco food samples while you wait for your watch 😉 My Omega AD never offers me food!

Spot on. They curate such a fantastic wine selection.

I hate shopping. Hate it. But I love Costco. Now that I live in an area without a Costco, I cant believe how much I miss it.

Sorry for the digression. ::facepalm1::

I can add my voice to being a big fan of Costco. We have the Executive membership and between the 2% rebate on Costco purchases and the additional cash-back from the Costco branded MasterCard it covers the cost of membership many times over each year.

However, the same thing that makes me appreciate Costco for most purchases I have found not applicable to their watches. For most consumer household items I find their purchasing agents generally do an excellent job sourcing products that offer:
1. great value
2. good selection (features)
3. simple choice as they offer 1, which history tells me will be a solid choice when compared with what's available in the market

The watches I see at our local store have not met any of the 3 criteria above:
1. value not good as I've never been drawn to what they offer
2. selection is either cheap 'fashion' brands or unattractive/undesireable versions of major brands (Seiko, etc..)
3. many offerings, not matching any list of 'top 5' watches for under $500 or under $1000 etc. I know these lists are all subjective and many are gimmicky and laughed at by WIS, but there are some reasonable options they 'could' carry in my opinion (Seiko SKX, Orient, ...)

Now, Costco 'turns' their inventory frequently and I suspect they often have only 1 unit of any given model in stock and once it's sold they replace it with a different model. Should they ever happen to put out a unit I would want to own I would be more than happy to buy from them.

Costco is amazing and has a stellar reputation. If the watch has issues, you should be able to bring it to Costco for a refund during the warranty period. I would not have reservations about buying an Omega at Costco. Watch selection is terrible so the point is moot. I do look every time I go.

I was in my local Costco today and was very surprised to see this:

On the shelf above was a Rolex for $35,999 which I did not photograph.

We love Costco, we have been members for close to 20 years. But I wonder how many $10,000 or $36,000 watches they sell.
Any chance these are on consignment from the manufacturers?

I would say there is zero chance of that.

With some further research, Mr. Archer is 100% right. Here is a link to a WAPO article from 2015. Costco purchased gray market watches to resell, Omega sued to stop the sales and eventually lost.

So it appears that Costco is buying gray market "wholesale" and retailing in its stores. That does leave the warranty question open, and personally, I can't see dropping $$$$$ for ANYTHING at Costco. Just my $.02 worth.

Sounds like you're a Sam's shopper.
Costco's warranty is better than any other gray market dealer. Frankly, I'd rather buy from Costco than any other gray marketer.
