It certainly is gorgeous... not sure it fits the budget constraints as defined earlier tho...

Edit: It actually does... "same or below a sub price". My Bad.

Then how about 45 Orient Ray or Mako? 😁

My alternative to the basic sub. Although I own mostly Omega watches, the green is striking.

OK I just fact checked myself, the corresponding Rolex sub is the 16800, which will cost roughly twice the 76100 in a similar condition.

With regards to the Orient Ray, I had one in blue a couple of years back. Great watch for the money, but couldn't get used to the day complication.

This just came in today for my collection- Tudor Sub 76100. Look at the amazing even patina. I have not seen many of these but the indices age very gracefully for the model it seems. Much like those of the tritium Bond SMPs

Compared to tritium acryllic Rolex subs, its rarer, cheaper, IMO way cooler, and can't be accused of being a knockoff.

You'd probably need to spend 2x-3x more $$$ to get a 1680 Sub this nice

Omega PO8500 is a good alternative to a Sub! I have both and they are keepers!

Get a nice Seiko Orange Monster for boating / diving - and get a cool anything for the same price as the Sub - less $200

You could also get a Tudor Pelagos or Black Bay and you actually have a legit Submariner for Rolex's sibling company for half the coast.

50 fathoms is pretty awesome! and the Omega SMP 300, potentially classier. but you cant go wrong with a sub

Did anyone already mention doxa?

Fyi, doxa co-founded hev with Rolex. So the pedigree is there.

I blame it on the autoconnect.

Like it's been said, if you want a sub, get one. I wanted a sub until I pulled the trigger and bought it. It wasn't for me, traded it a few weeks later for an Aqua-Terra. I'll get another Rolex, it will ONLY be the deep sea dweller!

Wear it. The proportions are off, only Rolex sub snobs drool offer it. The PO at that size make so much more sense.

As much as I hate to say it I rather have a red text sub over a sea dweller.

SD4000. Tapered lugs and less boxy than the SubC. But has a thicker case. Slightly more expensive on resale.

Or possibly, the Omega PO Li Ti. The blue dial just pops. I prefer it on the blue strap, but I sometimes change it over to the ti bracelet.

The Sea-Dweller 16600 holes case. You can pick them up for considerably less than a new sub. A friend of mine bought one right after I had bought a Sub 14060m holes case no date. I love my sub, but the 16600 is awesome. You have to see it on the wrist in person. The watch has a commanding presence without the "Hublot bling factor" you see with a lot of big watches. The date function without a cyclops looks awesome. You get a contemporary 3135 movement, solid end links, and a gloss dial without giving up the holes case and beveled edges. Pre-1999 versions have tritium dials, if you like that look.

I prefer Tudor snowflake because of the hand design.
Vintage-diver wise, really like the Omega seamaster 120 "big blue" 166.073 like so:

Eterna KonTiki also has fans.

I have a soft spot for the Certina DS3 from the 1970s but it's a bit of a wacko watch, hardly a submariner equivalent.
Not so many examples found, but there's one avail now:
