A gold coin at an online auction. Now I have to figure out what it is worth 馃槜

Crowned in 1878 he faced serious problems due to profound differences in the recently unified areas of Italy. He died in 1900 (something about) an attack by the Bresci anarchist(s).

I can't work out the coin, though. Their 20/50 and 100 lire gold coins had a bust on the obverse and shield on the reverse ... yours looks like a bird of some kind?

Thx! I appreciate the info. Yes, the photos are terrible. I pick up the item on the weekend and we鈥檒l see what we have. Maybe the anarchists were taunting him with fake bird coins 馃槈 I threw a low bid out at it with the plan that, if successful, the coin would be sold and cover my other purchase at the auction. I think I鈥檒l do okay. Better pics in a few days

Bought a new car. BMW 540i. Well, leased it, actually. No real pics, stole this one off of the dealer's web site.

Leftover 2019 (2020s are arriving) so hopefully I got a decent price. You never know. "We're losing money on this deal," they said. Sure.

Thanks again for the info 馃憤. I picked it up today. It is dated 1891, and has L 5 on the back side. I am going to guess this means 5 Lire. I鈥檒l also guess that all Italian鈥檚 walked around with Jeweller鈥檚 loupes so they could determine what denomination of coin they got as change from Starbucks.

Online I see similar designs on the silver coins from the era, but no gold like this one (many 20 lira though). I don鈥檛 know coins, it was a lucky auction win. Could you suggest a good website I could use to determine value? My goal is to sell it to help finance a watch. Thanks in advance for whatever you can provide.

The corrosion and poor strike makes me think it's a gaming piece. There's a lack of serifs and other issues. Have you got a magnet to hand? That'll tell you if it's a capped steel gaming thaler.

Here's the coin it's trying to be: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces19047.html

Thank you Jimmy. I appreciate your time. Well, good news, it doesn鈥檛 stick to a magnet. I鈥檒l take it to a coin shop in town, see what they have to say. Thx again

definitely not gold
Correct. I took it to a coin dealer. It鈥檚 basically a souvenir piece. Funny enough, this was my first online auction. Not a great outcome. Luckily I am out just $18 CDN, but still, that鈥檚 a nice lunch. I did get a boatload of vintage ladies straps at that auction too, which helped to complete a project.

Lesson learned, don鈥檛 buy if you don鈥檛 know what you are doing; auctions can say just about anything and you are likely stuck with it; buying without seeing the item in person can be risky. There is a good story along these lines here: https://omegaforums.net/threads/sot...e-aka-the-stories-photos-tell-us.99581/unread

Yup, with the 2020 models hitting showrooms a lot of dealers are trying to clear 2019 inventory. I've wanted a Subaru for 20+ years but I've been relegated to riving the wife's hand-me-downs. Don't cry for me just yet though. She has good taste and is an extremely low mileage driver, so I've had some nice vehicles over the years. Last was an Infiniti QX56. She had it for 3 years and I've been driving it for the last 7. Alas, it's long in the tooth and the engine is on it's last legs. 170,000 miles on New Jersey roads takes a toll. So now it's my time. Subaru Outback, 2019 2.5i (the most basic) in pearl white.

Nice. I'm a Subie Fan - Had a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS, then a 2004 STI, then a 2007 Tribeca, then a 2013 Tribeca for the wife while I drove a used Infiniti G35x AWD, then a 2015 Forester XT, and now I drive a 2017 WRX LTD while my son drives the Forester.

I bought a used Jeep Wrangler impulsively... nothing all too special about it besides getting the 'standard' off-roading upgrades that can be done before it cannot safely travel on the highway. Lots of fun to drive with it all opened up and just wearing a bikini top. Makes me feel like a kid again with a new toy generally lacking practicality. Still, I think I'm gonna keep it as a secondary vehicle until it completely dies...

Bought this bracelet. Thought it would be nice together with some of my watches... Did I manage to keep it? Not, my 17 years old son thought the same... Fits well on him...馃槖

Congrats. I love my 13 outback. Pretty much bulletproof. I had to wait until they made it for those of us who are big and tall.

I'm kind of surprised at how roomy mine is. A neighbor complained that her Forrester is cramped. I'm way bigger than she is, and I have plenty of room. The driver's seat goes back far enough that If I were to move it there I could barely drive it. Plenty of side-to-side room as well.

Stopped in the Barbour boutique today, and picked up something for Summer and something for Winter.

Getting an early start on Xmas for the nieces and nephews. Stretch Armstrong and slime.
